Skin Scaling in Seoul: The Korean Exfoliation and Cleansing Facial

Skin scaling (피부 스케일링) is the Korean name for a professional exfoliation and deep-cleansing treatment: a mild acid or water-based exfoliant loosens dead skin cells and excess oil, pores are gently cleared, and the skin is soothed afterward. At Hommage Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa checks your skin first and adjusts the strength for oily, combination or sensitive skin.

Quick answer

Skin scaling(피부 스케일링) is the Korean clinic facial that combines a mild acid or water-based exfoliant, gentle pore cleansing and soothing care. At Hommage Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa checks your skin first and sets the strength for oily, combination or sensitive skin. A session takes about 30–60 minutes with minimal downtime, and the cleaner, smoother feel usually lasts 1–3 weeks.

Key takeaways

  • A maintenance treatment for oily, congested or dull skin, usually repeated every 2–4 weeks.
  • It is not acne treatment on its own; inflamed or cystic acne needs medical care first.
  • The 2024 American Academy of Dermatology acne guideline found the evidence for peels and extraction too limited to make a recommendation.
  • It does not permanently shrink pores, fill scars or fade melasma.
  • Sterile tools and gentle technique keep the small risks of infection and dark marks low.

Skin scaling may suit you if you have

  • Oily or combination skin with blackheads, whiteheads or a rough T-zone
  • Dull skin and a build-up of dead cells or makeup residue
  • Mild, non-inflamed breakouts and want regular maintenance
  • A routine of other treatments and want a cleansing step between them

Wait or choose another option if you have

  • Painful, cystic or widespread inflamed acne that needs medical treatment first
  • Sunburn, an active cold sore, a skin infection or open wounds
  • Used isotretinoin recently: exfoliation is often postponed, so ask about timing
  • Pregnancy, aspirin allergy, or a rosacea or eczema flare: tell the doctor so acids can be adjusted

What is skin scaling?

In Korea, “skin scaling” (피부 스케일링) is a common clinic term for a professional exfoliation and cleansing facial. The name borrows from dental scaling: just as a dentist removes build-up from teeth, skin scaling removes the build-up of dead cells, oil and debris from the skin surface and pore openings.

It is not one fixed protocol. Most versions combine three steps:

  • Exfoliation: a mild acid such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, or a water-based exfoliating solution, softens the outer layer of dead cells.
  • Pore cleansing: softened oil plugs are cleared gently with sterile tools or light suction.
  • Soothing: a calming mask, cooling or a moisturizing serum settles the skin.

Outside Korea, a similar treatment might be called a clarifying facial or a light peel with extractions.

Who is skin scaling for?

Skin scaling is mainly a maintenance treatment for oily, congested or dull skin. It suits people who want cleaner-looking pores and a smoother surface on a regular schedule, and it is often part of Korean acne-prone skin routines.

It is not a treatment for moderate to severe acne on its own. Painful, inflamed or cystic acne needs medical care, and focused acne extraction is covered on our extraction facial page. If your main concern is persistent shine, a sebum control therapy plan looks at why the skin is oily. For sensitive skin that stings with acids, a gentler enzyme peel facial may suit you better.

What happens during a skin scaling session?

A session usually takes 30–60 minutes and needs no anesthesia.

  1. Cleansing: makeup, sunscreen and surface oil are removed.
  2. Exfoliation: the exfoliating solution is applied and timed while your skin is watched. Mild tingling is normal.
  3. Neutralizing or rinsing , depending on the product.
  4. Pore cleansing: softened blackheads and whiteheads are cleared gently, without squeezing inflamed spots.
  5. Soothing: a calming mask or cooling, then moisturizer and broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Most people return to work or their plans straight afterward.

How long do skin scaling results last?

Skin scaling gives a short-term result. Skin feels cleaner and smoother straight away, and that effect typically lasts about 1–3 weeks, because oil and dead cells build up again as the skin renews itself. That is why many people repeat it every 2–4 weeks.

Gentle exfoliation gives a fresh look, not deep correction. Skin scaling will not shrink pores permanently, fill acne scars or fade melasma. For lasting pore change, see pore tightening laser options.

Aftercare:

  • Use a gentle cleanser and a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer.
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Do not pick at small red marks where pores were cleared.
  • Skip scrubs, retinoids and exfoliating acids for about 2–3 days, and avoid saunas that day.

Skin scaling vs chemical peel vs microdermabrasion: what is the difference?

The three overlap, and the differences are mostly in depth and purpose:

  • Skin scaling: a light exfoliation combined with pore cleansing and soothing, aimed at regular maintenance.
  • Chemical peel: the acid itself is the treatment, often at a higher strength or in a series for acne, marks or texture; see salicylic acid peel .
  • Microdermabrasion or diamond peel: physical exfoliation with crystals or a diamond tip, without acids; see diamond peel .

Your doctor can combine or rotate these depending on how your skin responds.

Risks and possible side effects

Skin scaling is a low-risk treatment, but side effects can occur:

  • Redness, stinging or a warm feeling for a few hours.
  • Small red marks, mild swelling or rarely tiny bruises where pores were cleared.
  • Dryness or light flaking for a day or two.
  • A temporary breakout as congested pores clear.
  • Irritant or allergic reactions to an acid or product; salicylic acid is avoided if you are allergic to aspirin.
  • Dark marks after irritation or extraction, more likely in darker skin or with sun exposure.
  • Infection, which is rare when sterile tools are used.

Contact the clinic if you notice spreading redness, pus, increasing pain, or crusting that does not settle within a few days.

Skin scaling at Hommage Clinic

Hommage Clinic is a walk-in-friendly women's health and skin clinic in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station. Before any exfoliation, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa examines your skin to check whether breakouts need medical treatment, and sets the exfoliant strength and steps for your skin type. Soothing care the clinic uses, such as LDM or cryo cooling, can be added afterward. If oiliness and breakouts follow your cycle, our OB/GYN team can review the hormonal side in the same clinic; seeskin care for hormonal changesand allskin and aesthetic treatments.

Cosmetic facials are not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, while medical acne consultations and prescriptions may be covered for enrolled patients. Cost depends on the steps included and how often you repeat it, and you receive a written quote before treatment.

Mechanism

How skin scaling works: from clogged pore to clear pore

A blackhead or whitehead is a plug of oil and dead cells sitting in a pore opening. Left alone, the outer layer of dead cells can trap these plugs and make skin feel rough. Skin scaling works in sequence: the exfoliant first softens the surface and loosens the plug, which makes it easier to lift out gently without squeezing hard; the soothing step then calms the skin and reduces redness.

The choice of exfoliant matters. Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it reaches into pores and suits oily, acne-prone skin. Glycolic and lactic acids work mainly on the surface and can suit dull or rough skin. Water-based solutions are milder. Dr. Hwang chooses one based on your skin type and any sensitivity.

Personalized

Skin scaling for oily, combination, dry and sensitive skin

"Skin scaling" describes a type of facial, not a single product, so the version you receive should depend on your skin. Oily skin can usually handle a salicylic acid step and more thorough pore cleansing. Dry or sensitive skin needs a milder exfoliant, shorter contact time and more soothing. The guide below shows how the steps are typically adjusted.

Skin scaling by skin type: exfoliant and pore cleansing intensity, Hommage Women's Clinic, Gangnam, Seoul Four skin types with typical skin scaling settings. Oily: salicylic acid, thorough pore cleansing, every 2 to 4 weeks. Combination: T-zone focus. Dry: mild lactic acid or water-based, light cleansing, more soothing. Sensitive: gentlest option or enzyme peel, minimal extraction. Bars are illustrative. Why skin scaling is so popular in Korea

In Korea, many people visit a skin clinic for regular maintenance in the same way they might visit a hairdresser. Skin scaling fits that habit: it is quick, has little downtime and leaves skin feeling clean before a new season, a work event or a holiday. Humid Seoul summers tend to increase oiliness and congestion, while cold, dry winters can leave flaky build-up on the surface, so many people adjust how often they book with the season.

The popularity is a good reason to choose carefully. A clinic setting means someone can recognize when breakouts are actually inflamed acne, rosacea or a reaction to a product, and change the plan rather than repeating the same facial. If oiliness and breakouts follow your menstrual cycle or started after stopping the pill, mention it, because hormonal acne may respond better to treatment that addresses the cause.

Routine

Skin scaling every 2–4 weeks: the maintenance cycle

Skin scaling works best as part of a cycle. Right after a session your skin feels clean and smooth. Over the next one to three weeks, oil and dead cells gradually build up again, especially on the nose and chin. A home routine slows that build-up, and the next session resets it before pores become heavily clogged.

The most useful home habits are simple: a gentle cleanser twice a day, a light non-comedogenic moisturizer, daily sunscreen, and, if your doctor agrees, a leave-on salicylic acid or other acne product a few times a week. Harsh scrubs and pore strips tend to irritate the skin and are best avoided.

Evidence

Does skin scaling work? What the research says

Skin scaling is a Korean clinic term rather than a studied medical procedure, so there are no trials of "skin scaling" as such. Its parts, superficial chemical peels and comedone extraction, have been studied, mostly in small trials. In 2024 the American Academy of Dermatology updated its acne guidelines with 18 evidence-based recommendations. For physical treatments such as chemical peels and lesion extraction, the panel found the evidence insufficient to make a recommendation either way.

That does not mean skin scaling is useless. It means it should be seen as supportive care that helps skin look and feel clearer, alongside treatments with stronger evidence, such as topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxide, rather than instead of them.

Aftercare

After skin scaling: do's and don'ts for clear pores

Freshly cleared pores are open to bacteria and irritation for a day or so, and exfoliated skin is more sensitive to sun. What you do in the first few days affects whether you get the clean, smooth result or a few new breakouts and dark marks.

Do

  • Wash your hands before touching your face
  • Use a gentle cleanser and light, non-comedogenic moisturizer
  • Apply SPF 30+ every morning
  • Change your pillowcase the night after treatment
  • Keep using prescribed acne treatment once your skin feels calm

Don't

  • Pick or squeeze small red marks or new spots
  • Use scrubs, pore strips, retinoids or acids for 2–3 days
  • Go to a sauna, jjimjilbang or pool the same day
  • Apply heavy, oily creams over cleared pores
  • Book waxing or another peel in the same week

Traveling to Seoul

Korean skin scaling for international visitors

Skin scaling is one of the most common Korean clinic treatments, and many visitors want to try it while in Seoul. One session of about an hour, including a skin check, is enough to experience it, with no follow-up visit needed. Hommage Women's Clinic is in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station (Line 9 and Shinbundang Line).

  • Book in the first half of your stay, so any small red marks or a minor breakout settle before you fly.
  • Avoid booking straight after a long-haul flight, when skin is drier and more reactive.
  • Bring your passport and a list of skincare and medicines, especially retinoids, isotretinoin or an aspirin allergy.
  • Ask Dr. Hwang for a simple home routine to continue the effect after you go home.
  • Contact the clinic by WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or the contact form to arrange language support.
Choosing well

How to choose a skin scaling clinic in Seoul

Skin scaling is offered by dermatology clinics, aesthetic clinics and skincare shops across Seoul, with very different levels of medical input. These questions help you compare, including here:

  • Does a doctor check my skin first? Inflamed or cystic acne needs medical treatment, not just a facial.
  • Which exfoliant is used, and why? It should match your skin type and any allergies, including aspirin.
  • Are tools sterile and single-use where possible? Pore cleansing opens the skin briefly.
  • Will they avoid squeezing inflamed spots? Forcing them can spread inflammation and leave marks.
  • Is the schedule realistic? Every 2–4 weeks for oily skin; less often for dry skin.
  • Is there a written quote? Including any add-on soothing care.

What affects skin scaling cost in Seoul?

Cost depends on the steps included (exfoliation only, or with pore cleansing and a soothing mask), whether add-ons such as LDM or cryo cooling are used, and how often you return. Cosmetic facials are not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, while medical acne consultations and prescriptions may be covered for enrolled patients. You receive a written quote before treatment.

Skin scaling: frequently asked questions

  • What is skin scaling in Korea?

Skin scaling is the Korean clinic term for a professional exfoliation and deep-cleansing facial. A mild acid or water-based exfoliant softens dead cells and oil, pores are cleared gently, and the skin is soothed. It is usually a regular maintenance treatment for oily, congested or dull skin rather than a one-off fix.

  • How often should I get skin scaling?

Every 2–4 weeks is common for oily or congested skin, roughly in line with how quickly the outer skin layer renews. More frequent sessions can dry out or irritate the skin. Drier or sensitive skin may only need it every month or two. Your doctor will suggest a rhythm based on how your skin responds.

  • Does skin scaling hurt?

The exfoliating step usually causes only mild tingling or warmth. Clearing blackheads and whiteheads can feel briefly uncomfortable, especially around the nose, but it is short. Numbing is not needed. Tell the person treating you if anything feels too strong, so the product can be removed or the pace adjusted.

  • Is skin scaling good for acne?

Skin scaling can help with blackheads, whiteheads and mild breakouts, and it is often used as maintenance for acne-prone skin. It does not treat painful, inflamed or cystic acne on its own, which usually needs prescription treatment first. Your doctor may combine it with acne laser treatment or medication.

  • Can I wear makeup after skin scaling?

Usually the next day, or after a few hours if your skin is not red. Freshly cleared pores are more open to bacteria, so use clean brushes and non-comedogenic products, and remove makeup gently. Skip scrubs, retinoids and exfoliating acids for about 2–3 days.

  • Can foreigners get skin scaling in Seoul?

Yes. International patients and foreign residents can book an appointment at Hommage Clinic and should bring a passport for registration. Because downtime is minimal, skin scaling fits easily into a short stay in Seoul. Please contact us before your visit to arrange language support.

  • Is skin scaling the same as a chemical peel?

They overlap. Skin scaling usually includes a light acid step, but it also adds pore cleansing and soothing, and the aim is regular maintenance. A chemical peel uses the acid itself as the main treatment, often at a higher strength or as a series. See salicylic acid peel.

  • Does skin scaling shrink pores?

Pores can look smaller for a while once oil plugs are cleared, but skin scaling does not permanently change pore size. For lasting change, collagen-building options such as a pore tightening laser may be discussed.

  • Is skin scaling safe for sensitive skin?

It can be, with a milder exfoliant, shorter contact time and little or no extraction. If your skin stings with most acids, Dr. Hwang may suggest an enzyme peel facial instead. Rosacea or eczema flares should settle first.

  • Can I get skin scaling while pregnant?

Tell your doctor. Gentle cleansing and some mild exfoliants are often considered acceptable, but higher-strength salicylic acid and retinoids are usually avoided in pregnancy, so the product and steps are adjusted.

  • Why do I get a few breakouts after skin scaling?

A small flare in the first days can happen as congested pores clear. It usually settles within a week. Do not pick at new spots, and contact the clinic if breakouts are painful, spreading or not improving.

  • What is the difference between skin scaling and an extraction facial?

Skin scaling is mainly exfoliation with light pore cleansing, aimed at regular maintenance. An extraction facial focuses on clearing clogged pores and acne lesions more thoroughly, usually for acne-prone skin.

  • Is there scientific evidence for skin scaling?

Skin scaling as a named treatment has not been studied. Its parts, superficial peels and comedone extraction, have small studies behind them, and the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology acne guideline found the evidence insufficient to recommend for or against them. It is best seen as supportive care alongside proven acne treatments.
