Salicylic Acid Peel (BHA Peel) for Blackheads and Oily Skin

A salicylic acid peel is a superficial chemical peel using beta hydroxy acid (BHA), an oil-soluble acid that penetrates into pores to dissolve the oil and dead skin that cause blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts. At Hommage Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa checks your skin, medicines and pregnancy status first, then sets the strength and number of layers.

Quick answer

A salicylic acid peel(BHA peel) is a superficial chemical peel with an oil-soluble acid that travels into pores to dissolve the oil and dead skin behind blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts. At Hommage Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa sets the strength and layers after checking your skin, medicines, aspirin allergy and pregnancy status. A session takes about 20–30 minutes, with light flaking for 2–5 days; most plans are 3–6 peels, 2–4 weeks apart.

Key takeaways

  • Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which is why it suits oily, congested, acne-prone skin better than most other peels.
  • The white film during the peel ( pseudo-frost) is dried acid crystals, not a burn.
  • Avoid it if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to aspirin.
  • A peel cannot permanently shrink pores; results last with a series and a good daily routine.

What does a salicylic acid peel do?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Unlike water-soluble alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, it is oil-soluble, so it can travel along the oily lining of the pore and dissolve the plug of sebum and dead cells inside. This is why it is especially useful for blackheads and whiteheads.

Salicylic acid also has a mild anti-inflammatory effect, which helps calm red, irritated spots, and it gently loosens dead skin on the surface so the skin looks smoother and brighter. In clinic, peels typically use a concentration of around 20–30%, much stronger than the 0.5–2% found in cleansers and toners.

As the solution dries, it often leaves a white powdery film called pseudo-frost. This is crystallized salicylic acid, not a sign of deep injury, and it is washed off at the end.

Who is a salicylic acid peel for?

A salicylic acid peel suits oily, acne-prone or congested skin. It is commonly used for blackheads, whiteheads, enlarged-looking pores and mild to moderate inflammatory acne. It is generally well tolerated in medium and darker skin tones when used at appropriate strengths, though there is still a risk of dark marks.

It is less suited to very dry or easily irritated skin, and it does not treat deep cysts, indented scars or deeper pigmentation. For those, other options may fit better. If you want to compare it with glycolic, mandelic or Jessner peels, see our guide to chemical peels for acne .

Moderate to severe acne usually needs prescription treatment, such as topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, hormonal therapy or isotretinoin, with peels used as support. Breakouts that follow your cycle can be hormonal and are worth checking for conditions such as PCOS .

What happens during a salicylic acid peel?

A session takes about 20–30 minutes. Most people feel tingling or stinging in the first minute or two, which often eases as salicylic acid has a mild numbing effect.

  1. Your face is cleansed and degreased so the acid spreads evenly. Petroleum jelly may protect the corners of the nose, eyes and lips.
  2. The salicylic acid solution is applied in one or more layers, and your skin is watched closely.
  3. After a few minutes, the white pseudo-frost appears as the acid dries. The peel does not need a chemical neutralizer; it is rinsed off with water.
  4. Calming products and sunscreen are applied. Gentle extraction of blackheads may follow, as in our extraction facial .

How long do salicylic acid peel results last?

Pores often look clearer and skin smoother within one to two weeks of a peel, but because oil and dead skin keep building up, results last longer with a series and a good home routine. Most plans use 3–6 peels spaced 2–4 weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance.

A peel cannot shrink pores for good or stop oil production. Pores look smaller when they are clear, so keeping them clear between sessions matters. For oiliness and pore size specifically, our pages on sebum control therapy and pore tightening laser describe other options.

After a peel, use a gentle cleanser and light moisturizer, wear SPF 30 or higher every day, avoid scrubs and other acids for about a week, and do not peel off flaking skin.

Risks and possible side effects

Salicylic acid peels are superficial and generally well tolerated, but side effects can happen. Expected effects include stinging, redness, tightness, dryness and light flaking for a few days. A short-term increase in breakouts can occur as clogged pores clear.

Less common risks include irritation or allergic reactions, temporary darkening of the skin (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), blistering, crusting and, rarely, infection or scarring. Because salicylic acid can be absorbed through the skin, large areas are not peeled at once; too much absorption can cause salicylate toxicity (salicylism), with ringing in the ears, nausea or dizziness. This is very unlikely with a standard facial peel.

Peels are usually postponed if you take isotretinoin or have stopped it recently, have used strong retinoids or waxed the area in the past few days, or have an active infection. Salicylic acid peels are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Contact the clinic if you notice blistering, oozing, worsening pain, swelling, dizziness or ringing in the ears.

Mechanism

BHA vs AHA peel: why salicylic acid gets inside oily pores

The key difference between a salicylic acid (BHA) peel and a glycolic acid (AHA) peel is solubility. Glycolic acid dissolves in water, so it works mainly on the surface of the skin. Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can follow the oily lining of the pore and break up the plug of sebum and dead cells inside. That is why BHA is the usual first choice for blackheads, whiteheads and oily, acne-prone skin, while AHA is often used for dull texture and marks.

Step by step

Salicylic acid peel step by step: what the white frost means

A salicylic acid peel looks a little different from other peels. As the solution dries, a white, powdery layer appears on the skin. This is called pseudo-frost: it is crystallized salicylic acid sitting on the surface, not a sign of a deep burn, and it washes off with water. Unlike glycolic peels, a salicylic acid peel does not need a chemical neutralizer.

Clinic or home?

Clinic salicylic acid peel vs BHA products at home

Salicylic acid is common in Korean and international skincare, usually at 0.5–2% in cleansers, toners and serums. In-clinic peels typically use around 20–30%, applied for a few minutes under supervision. The two do different jobs: a home product keeps pores clear day to day, while a clinic peel gives a stronger reset to congested skin. Many plans use both, but layering strong home acids right before or after a clinic peel can irritate the skin, so your doctor will tell you when to pause them.

Salicylic acid peel results: before, during and after a series

One salicylic acid peel can make pores look clearer within a week or two, but oil and dead skin keep building up. That is why most plans use a series of 3–6 peels, 2–4 weeks apart, and then occasional maintenance. A short-term increase in breakouts in the first weeks is common as clogged pores clear.

Safety first

Who should not have a salicylic acid peel?

Salicylic acid is chemically related to aspirin, and some of it is absorbed through the skin. That is behind most of the safety rules for this peel. Before every first peel, Dr. Hwang checks the points below.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding Salicylic acid peels are generally avoided; gentler options can be discussed.
  • Allergic to aspirin or salicylates Choose a different acid.
  • Taking isotretinoin now or recently Healing is slower; peels are usually postponed.
  • Strong retinoids or facial waxing in the last few days Pause first to avoid irritation.
  • Cold sore, infection, open wound or sunburn Wait until the skin has healed.
  • Large body areas Not peeled at once, to avoid salicylate absorption.

If a salicylic acid peel is not right for you, your doctor may suggest a gentler acid, blue light therapy or an extraction facial instead.

Aftercare

Salicylic acid peel aftercare: do's and don'ts

Most people return to work the same day. The week after the peel is about calm skin, sun protection and patience while light flaking settles.

Do

  • Rinse with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser
  • Use a light, oil-free moisturizer
  • Apply SPF 30 or higher every day
  • Let flakes come off on their own
  • Contact the clinic about dizziness, ringing in the ears or blistering

Don't

  • Use BHA, AHA, scrubs or retinoids for about a week
  • Pick at flaking skin or squeeze spots
  • Use saunas or sweat heavily for a day or two
  • Wax or thread the area soon after
  • Spend long hours in strong sun

Evidence

Does a salicylic acid peel work? What the research says

Salicylic acid itself is a recognized acne ingredient: the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology guideline conditionally recommends topical salicylic acid. In-clinic chemical peels are a different matter. The same guideline judged the published evidence for chemical peels as a procedure too limited to make a recommendation for or against them, mainly because trials are small, use different products and strengths, and have short follow-up.

Across 12 small randomised trials (387 people), commonly used peels, salicylic acid included, appeared similarly effective for mild-to-moderate acne and were well tolerated. Trial quality was very low to moderate.

What this means for you. A salicylic acid peel is a sensible, low-downtime option for oily, congested skin and mild to moderate acne, especially alongside proven topical treatment. It is not a substitute for prescription care when acne is moderate to severe or scarring, and results vary between people. Single small trials, like the comparison above, are encouraging but not conclusive.

Salicylic acid peel in Seoul for international patients

A salicylic acid peel takes about 30 minutes and most people return to normal plans the same day, so it fits easily into a trip. Visitors usually have one peel and take home a routine; foreign residents and longer stays can complete a series every 2–4 weeks. Hommage Women's Clinic is in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station (Line 9 and Shinbundang Line).

Before your visit

  • Pause strong retinoids and home acids for a few days, unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Bring your passport and a list of medicines and allergies, especially aspirin allergy and isotretinoin.
  • Book early in your trip, not right before a beach holiday.
  • Message the clinic by WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or the contact form to book and arrange language support.
Choosing well

How to choose a clinic for a salicylic acid peel in Seoul

Salicylic acid peels are widely offered, from beauty salons to medical clinics. Use these questions anywhere, including at Hommage Women's Clinic:

  • Is a physician involved? The doctor should set the strength and number of layers.
  • Do they ask about pregnancy and aspirin allergy? Both rule out a salicylic acid peel.
  • Do they check isotretinoin and retinoid use? These change timing and strength.
  • Do they treat only the face, or a small area at a time? Large areas raise absorption risk.
  • Do they plan medical care if acne is moderate to severe? A peel should support, not replace, treatment.

What affects the cost of a salicylic acid peel?

Cost depends on the number of peels in your series, whether extraction or another treatment is added on the same visit, and whether prescription acne care is part of the plan. Cosmetic peels are not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, while medical acne consultations and prescriptions may be for enrolled patients. You receive a written quote before treatment.

Salicylic acid peel: frequently asked questions

  • Does a salicylic acid peel hurt?

A salicylic acid peel usually causes tingling, warmth or stinging for the first minute or two. Salicylic acid has a mild numbing effect, so the sensation often settles while the peel is still on. A fan helps, and most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Afterward the skin may feel tight for a day.

  • How often can I get a salicylic acid peel?

Most people have a peel every 2–4 weeks for a series of about 3–6 sessions, then occasional maintenance. Peeling more often does not speed up results and can irritate the skin. The interval depends on how your skin reacts, so the doctor may lengthen or shorten it.

  • Will a salicylic acid peel make me peel or flake?

Many people have light dryness or fine flaking for about 2–5 days, especially around the nose and mouth. Some have little visible peeling, which does not mean the peel failed. Moisturize, avoid scrubbing, and let flakes come off on their own.

  • Can I get a salicylic acid peel while pregnant?

Salicylic acid peels are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, because the acid can be absorbed through the skin and pregnancy safety data are limited. If you are pregnant, the doctor can discuss gentler options for acne and congestion. Our guide to skin care for hormonal changes covers pregnancy skin changes.

  • Is a salicylic acid peel better than a glycolic peel?

Neither is better for everyone. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it suits oily skin, blackheads and acne. Glycolic acid works more on the surface and suits dull, uneven texture and some marks. The doctor may choose one or the other, or a blend, based on your skin type and goals.

  • Can foreigners get a salicylic acid peel in Seoul?

Yes. Foreign residents and visitors can have a salicylic acid peel at Hommage Clinic in Gangnam. Bring your passport for registration and a list of products and medicines you use. Avoid planning intense sun exposure right after, and contact us before your visit to arrange language support.

  • What is the white frost during a salicylic acid peel?

It is called pseudo-frost: crystallized salicylic acid that forms on the surface as the solution dries. It is expected and is not a sign of a deep burn. It is washed off with water at the end of the peel.

  • Can I have a salicylic acid peel if I am allergic to aspirin?

No. Salicylic acid is chemically related to aspirin, so people with aspirin or salicylate allergy should choose a different peel. Tell the doctor about any drug allergies before treatment.

  • Does a salicylic acid peel shrink pores?

It cannot permanently shrink pores, but pores look smaller when they are clear of oil and debris. Keeping them clear with a series and a good home routine maintains the effect. For pore size specifically, see pore tightening laser.

  • Can I use my BHA toner after a salicylic acid peel?

Pause home acids, including BHA and AHA products, and retinoids for about a week after a peel, or until your doctor says to restart. Using them too soon can irritate freshly peeled skin.

  • Will my skin break out after a salicylic acid peel?

A short-term increase in breakouts can happen in the first weeks as clogged pores clear. It usually settles over the series. Contact the clinic if spots become very painful or crusted, or if you notice blistering.

  • Is a salicylic acid peel safe for darker or Asian skin?

Salicylic acid peels are generally well tolerated in medium and darker skin tones at appropriate strengths, but there is still a risk of dark marks. Starting conservatively and using daily sunscreen lowers that risk.

  • Can I get a salicylic acid peel on my back or chest?

Small body areas can sometimes be treated, but large areas are not peeled at once because salicylic acid is absorbed through the skin and too much can cause salicylate toxicity. The doctor decides how much area is safe to treat per session.
