What is the hymen, and what does hymenoplasty do?
The hymen is a thin, flexible fold of tissue around the vaginal opening. Its shape and thickness vary widely from person to person. It is often ring- or crescent-shaped, and some women are born with very little hymenal tissue at all.
The hymen does not need sex to change. It can stretch or develop small tears with tampon use, sports, cycling, horseback riding, pelvic exams or ordinary growth, often without anyone noticing. For these reasons, the hymen cannot show whether someone has had sex. Many women do not bleed the first time they have intercourse, and when bleeding does happen, it is usually from small tears linked to dryness or tension. The World Health Organization has stated that “virginity testing” has no scientific basis.
Hymenoplasty brings the remaining edges of hymenal tissue together with fine dissolvable stitches, which narrows the vaginal opening. When little tissue remains, a thin flap of the lining just inside the vagina can be used instead.
Why do women choose hymenoplasty?
Women choose hymenoplasty for many personal reasons, including cultural or religious expectations, marriage, or a wish to feel a sense of closure after a difficult experience. Whatever your reason, it is your decision, and you will not be asked to justify it.

What happens during hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty is a short outpatient procedure, usually 30–60 minutes, and you go home the same day.
- Consultation and exam: Dr. Park asks about your health and your timing, then gently examines the vaginal opening to see how much hymenal tissue remains and to rule out infection.
- Scheduling: the procedure is planned outside your period and ideally at least 6 weeks before any important date, so the tissue has time to heal.

- Repair: the edges of the hymen are trimmed where needed and joined with fine dissolvable stitches.

How long does hymenoplasty take to heal?
Most women feel mild soreness for several days, and the tissue heals fully in about 6 weeks. Light spotting or discharge in the first week is common. The stitches usually dissolve on their own within a few weeks.

Risks and possible side effects of hymenoplasty
Hymenoplasty is a minor procedure, but like any surgery it carries risks. Possible side effects include:
- Pain, swelling and spotting for several days.
- Infection , which usually responds to treatment if caught early.
- Wound separation , where stitches pull through before healing, especially with early sex, tampon use or strenuous activity.
- Narrowing or scarring that makes the first intercourse painful.
- Temporary discomfort when passing urine.
It is also important to know that hymenoplasty cannot make bleeding at first intercourse certain. Some women bleed afterward and some do not, just as with an intact hymen.

Hymenoplasty vs vaginoplasty: what's the difference?
The two procedures work at different levels. Hymenoplasty repairs only the thin tissue at the vaginal opening, is short and is done under local anesthesia. Vaginoplasty tightens the muscles and lining of the vaginal canal, usually after childbirth, and involves a longer recovery.

The result is a narrower opening with a more continuous rim of tissue. The stitches dissolve on their own within a few weeks.
Some women have very little hymenal tissue, either naturally or after childbirth or earlier tears. In that case a thin flap of the lining just inside the vaginal opening can be used to create a similar rim.
