There is no medical cut-off that makes a size abnormal. What matters is whether the tissue causes rubbing, twisting, pain, hygiene problems or distress for you.

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, also called labia minora reduction, removes or reshapes part of the inner lips that sit on either side of the vaginal opening. The goal is to reduce excess length, smooth uneven edges or improve symmetry while keeping a natural shape and preserving sensation.

There is no single normal size. Inner labia vary widely, and it is common for them to extend past the outer lips or for one side to be longer than the other. Labiaplasty is an option when that tissue causes physical discomfort or distress, not a correction of something abnormal. It is one of several cosmetic gynecology procedures and is often discussed alongside clitoral hood reduction .

Trim or wedge: how is labiaplasty done?

Surgeons mainly use two techniques, chosen to suit your anatomy and goals.

• Trim (edge resection): excess tissue is removed along the edge of each inner lip. It reliably shortens the labia and can also remove darker edges, but it changes the natural border.
• Wedge resection: a V-shaped section is removed from the thickest part and the edges are joined, keeping the natural edge and color. It needs careful planning because the wound is under more tension.

Is labiaplasty painful?

You should not feel pain during the procedure. You can choose local anesthesia, where the area is numbed while you are awake, or IV sedation, where you are drowsy and usually remember little. A numbing cream is applied before the injection to make it more comfortable.

Afterward, most women describe soreness, swelling and a stinging feeling for the first few days, which is usually controlled with regular pain relief, cold packs wrapped in cloth and loose clothing. Discomfort typically eases noticeably within a week.

Labiaplasty recovery: how long does it take?

Most women return to desk work within 1–3 days, and some feel ready the next day, but full healing takes around 6 weeks. A typical timeline:

• Days 1–3: swelling and soreness are at their peak. Rest, use cold packs and keep the area clean and dry.
• Week 1–2: swelling and bruising fade; dissolvable stitches start to loosen. Gentle walking is fine.
• Weeks 4–6: most women can return to sex, tampons, swimming, cycling and full exercise once the doctor confirms healing.
• Months 3–6: remaining swelling settles and the final shape becomes clear.

Rinse with lukewarm water after using the toilet, pat dry, and avoid baths, saunas and tight underwear until you are told otherwise. If you are traveling, plan to stay in Seoul for at least 7 days for a wound check before flying.

Risks and possible side effects

Labiaplasty is a common, generally well-tolerated procedure, but it is still surgery. Expected effects include swelling, bruising, mild bleeding or spotting, and tenderness. Possible complications include:

• Infection, or a collection of blood under the skin (hematoma)
• Wound separation, more likely with the wedge technique or if the area is stretched too early
• Mild asymmetry, irregular edges or scar tissue, occasionally needing a small revision
• Removing too much tissue, which can cause dryness, tightness or pain during sex and is hard to reverse
• Temporary or, rarely, lasting changes in sensation

Contact the clinic promptly if you have heavy bleeding, fever, rapidly increasing swelling or pain, pus or a foul smell, or difficulty passing urine.

Labiaplasty with other procedures

Some women have extra skin folds around the clitoris that look more prominent after the inner labia are reduced, and a clitoral hood reduction can be done at the same time. If the outer lips have lost volume, labia majora augmentation may be considered. For darker skin along the labial edges, the clinic offers a separate laser for intimate area lightening , which takes about 15 minutes after numbing cream. Trim vs wedge labiaplasty: which technique suits you?

Both techniques give natural-looking results in experienced hands. A systematic review of 19 studies and 1,949 women found satisfaction between 94% and 100% for every technique studied, so the choice depends on your anatomy, not on one method being best. The trim technique removes a strip along the free edge of each inner lip. The wedge technique removes a V-shaped section from the widest part and joins the edges, so the natural edge and color stay in place.

Many women who ask about labiaplasty are not focused on appearance at all. They are cyclists, runners, riders or yoga teachers whose inner labia get pinched, twisted or rubbed raw in leggings, swimwear or on a saddle. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recognizes interference with athletic activities and pain during sex as clinical reasons for labial surgery, as distinct from purely cosmetic requests.

After pregnancy and birth

Pregnancy and vaginal birth can stretch, tear or change the color of the labia. Because tissue keeps changing for months afterward, it is usually best to wait until at least six months after birth, and until you have finished breastfeeding, before deciding. If you plan more children you may prefer to wait, although labiaplasty does not usually prevent a later vaginal birth.

Getting back to sport

Gentle walking is encouraged from the first days. Low-impact exercise can usually resume once you are comfortable, while cycling, spinning, running, horse riding, swimming and yoga poses that stretch the area wait until the 4–6 week check confirms healing.

Labiaplasty is one of the better-studied intimate procedures, but most studies are small, rely on women's own reports and follow patients for months rather than years. With that limit in mind, the large reviews below agree on two points: satisfaction is high, and the most common problem is part of the wound reopening, which usually heals with care or a small repair.
