Quick answer

Thermage FLX is a non-invasive skin-tightening treatment that uses monopolar radiofrequency, with surface cooling, to heat the deep dermis so collagen contracts and then rebuilds. At Hommage Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Thermage is planned around your skin thickness and laxity and reviewed by Dr. Kim Hyunbin. A full face takes about 45–90 minutes with minimal downtime; results build over 2–6 months and often last 1–2 years.

Key takeaways

  • Thermage tightens and smooths skin; it is best for mild to moderate laxity, crepey skin and eyelid looseness.
  • It works on a broad volume of the dermis, unlike HIFU, which lifts the deeper SMAS layer with focused points.
  • One session is usually enough per cycle; many people repeat about once a year.
  • Evidence shows real but modest tightening, and study quality is limited, so expectations should stay realistic.

Thermage may suit you if you have

  • Mild to moderate looseness on the cheeks, jawline, neck or around the eyes
  • Crepey, thinning skin or a softening jawline, and you prefer no needles or incisions
  • Early laxity you want to slow down, often from your mid-30s onward
  • Skin that has lost firmness after weight loss or around menopause

Wait or choose another option if you

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (treatment is usually postponed)
  • Have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or other implanted electronic device
  • Have an active infection, cold sore, open wound or eczema flare in the area
  • Have heavy jowls or marked sagging, where surgery or a combined plan works better

How does Thermage work?

Thermage heats the skin from the inside using monopolar radiofrequency, a type of electrical energy that turns into heat as it passes through tissue. The heat makes existing collagen fibers contract, which gives some immediate firmness, and it starts a healing response that builds new collagen over the next few months.

“Monopolar” means the energy flows from the treatment tip through your body to a grounding pad placed on your back or side. This lets the heat spread through a volume of tissue: the deep dermis and the fibrous strands (septae) in the fat just beneath it. Before, during and after each pulse, a cooling spray protects the surface so the outer skin is not burned.

Thermage FLX is the current generation of the system. It measures how your skin conducts energy on every pulse and adjusts the output automatically (a feature called AccuREP), and it uses a larger tip for the face plus a small dedicated tip for the eyelids.

What can Thermage treat?

Thermage is most effective for mild to moderate skin laxity: skin that has started to soften and loosen but has not yet folded into heavy jowls. It tightens and smooths rather than lifting tissue a long way.

  • Face: cheeks, jawline and early jowls, with a firmer, smoother overall texture.
  • Eyes: crepey upper and lower eyelid skin and hooding, using the small eye tip with protective eye shields.
  • Neck and under the chin: loose or crepey skin. For fat under the chin, see double chin reduction .
  • Body: abdomen, arms or knees; our RF body tightening page explains body options.

Thermage is not a substitute for a surgical facelift. If you have significant sagging, an honest assessment may point you toward threads, a combined plan or a surgical opinion instead.

What happens during a Thermage session?

A full-face Thermage FLX session typically takes 45–90 minutes, including preparation. Most people return to normal activities the same day.

  1. Preparation: your skin is cleansed, photographed and covered with numbing cream for about 30–45 minutes. A temporary grid is marked on the skin to guide even coverage.
  2. Treatment: a grounding pad is placed on your body, and the physician moves the tip square by square. Each pulse feels like a brief wave of deep heat, followed by cooling and vibration.
  3. Feedback: the energy level is adjusted to your comfort. Bony areas such as the jawline and forehead usually feel stronger than the cheeks.
  4. Finish: the grid is removed and the skin is soothed. Mild redness is normal.

When will I see results, and how long do they last?

You may notice slight firmness straight away, but the main improvement develops gradually over 2–6 months as new collagen forms. Results typically last 1–2 years, and many people repeat Thermage about once a year to maintain them.

How much change you see depends on your starting point. People with mild laxity and good skin quality usually notice the clearest improvement; very loose or sun-damaged skin responds less. Your skin also continues to age, so Thermage slows the visible process rather than stopping it.

Aftercare is simple. Use gentle skincare and sunscreen, avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for a day or two, and skip strong exfoliants or retinoids for a few days if your skin feels sensitive. Makeup can usually be applied the same day or the next morning.

Risks and possible side effects of Thermage

Thermage is a well-established treatment, but heat-based devices always carry some risk. Common, short-lived effects include redness, mild swelling, tenderness and tingling for a few hours to a few days. Faint grid marks or small raised bumps can appear and usually fade within days.

Less common effects include blisters, crusting or small burns, temporary numbness or altered sensation, and, rarely, a small dent caused by loss of fat beneath an area that received too much heat. These risks are reduced by the cooling system, careful energy settings and honest feedback from you during treatment.

Contact the clinic if you notice blistering, crusting, pain that worsens after the first two days, a new dip or dent in the skin, or numbness that lasts more than a few days. Tell us before treatment about any implanted device, recent fillers or threads, skin conditions and medications.

Thermage vs Ulthera: which is right for you?

Thermage and Ulthera work at different depths, so the choice depends on what you want to change. Thermage uses radiofrequency to heat a broad volume of the dermis, which mainly tightens and smooths the skin itself. Ulthera uses micro-focused ultrasound to place tiny heat points at set depths, including the SMAS, the deeper muscle-and-fascia layer that surgeons tighten in a facelift.

  • Choose Thermage for crepey skin, overall texture, eyelid laxity and a firmer feel.
  • Choose Ulthera when the priority is lifting the deeper structure along the jawline, cheeks and brow. See HIFU facial lifting .
  • Combine them when you have both skin laxity and deeper descent. The two are often done on the same day.

Other options include RF jawline tightening with different RF devices and thread lifting for a more immediate mechanical lift.

Thermage at Hommage Clinic

Hommage Clinic is a women's health and skin clinic in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station, and welcomes walk-ins during opening hours. Lifting treatments are planned by a physician after looking at your skin thickness, fat volume and bone structure, so the energy is concentrated where it helps and reduced where your face is already lean.

Because the clinic offers Thermage FLX alongside Ulthera Prime, Tune Face (Accent Prime) and ONDA, the doctor can recommend one device or a combination rather than fitting every face to a single machine. Skin changes linked tomenopausecan also be discussed with the clinic's women's health team. You can see all of ourskin and aesthetic treatmentsin one place.

Cost depends on the areas treated, the number of pulses, the tip used and any combined treatments. Cosmetic procedures are not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance. You receive a written quote before treatment, and you canbook a consultationto get one.

Mechanism

How Thermage tightens skin: monopolar RF explained

Every Thermage pulse follows the same three-part rhythm. First, a burst of cooling spray chills the skin surface. Then radiofrequency energy flows from the tip into the skin and on toward a grounding pad on your body, turning into heat as it meets resistance in the deep dermis and the fibrous strands in the fat below. Finally, more cooling and a gentle vibration calm the nerve endings and protect the surface.

The result is a layer of controlled, even warmth below a cool surface. Heated collagen fibers shorten and thicken, which explains the slight firmness some people notice right away, and the tissue then starts a repair process that lays down new collagen over the next months. Because the heat spreads through a volume rather than in separate points, Thermage is particularly suited to tightening and smoothing skin over wide or delicate areas such as the cheeks, neck and eyelids.

Eye area

Thermage for eyes: tightening eyelid skin without surgery

Eyelid skin is the thinnest on the face, and it is one of the first places to look crepey or hooded. Thermage is one of the few energy-based devices designed to treat the eyelids directly, using a small dedicated tip. Plastic eye shields are placed over the eyes first, so the energy reaches the lid skin but not the eye itself.

Thermage eye treatment aims to firm crepey upper and lower lid skin and soften mild hooding. It does not remove fat bags under the eyes, and it will not replace eyelid surgery when there is a lot of excess skin. Early research on periorbital radiofrequency, including a multicenter study of 86 people, reported less wrinkling and laxity around the eyes, although that study had no control group. The doctor will tell you honestly whether your eyes are likely to benefit.

Treatment areas

Thermage treatment areas and how each one feels

A Thermage plan is built area by area. The doctor decides how many passes each zone needs, adds extra passes along lines of laxity such as the jawline, and reduces energy where the face is lean or the skin is thin. Comfort also differs by area: zones close to bone conduct heat more intensely, while fleshier areas feel milder. Knowing this in advance helps you give useful feedback during treatment, which is one of the most important safety checks.

Compare

Thermage vs other radiofrequency treatments

Thermage is one of several radiofrequency (RF) treatments, and the names can be confusing. They all use heat to remodel collagen, but they deliver it in different ways, which changes what they are best at. The doctor may suggest one, or combine them, depending on whether your priority is skin tightness, jawline definition or texture and scars.

Thermage FLX

Monopolar RF

Broad, even dermal heat with cooling. Best for overall skin tightness, crepey skin and eyelids. Usually one session a year.

Jawline RF

Tune Face and others

RF focused on contour and the lower face; often a course of sessions. See RF jawline tightening.

RF microneedling

Results

Thermage results timeline: what to expect and when

Thermage before-and-after changes are gradual, so it helps to know what is normal at each stage. The firmness you may feel on the day comes from collagen contracting and a little swelling. The improvement that lasts comes from new collagen, which takes months to form. Judge the result at about three months or later, ideally against photos taken in the same light before treatment.

Aftercare

Thermage aftercare: do's and don'ts

Thermage does not break the skin, so there is no wound care. The aim of aftercare is to avoid adding heat or irritation to skin that has just been warmed deeply, and to spot early the rare signs that need a check.

Do

  • Use a mild cleanser and plain moisturizer
  • Apply sunscreen every morning
  • Use a cool compress if skin feels warm
  • Drink water and sleep well while skin recovers
  • Contact the clinic about blisters or a new dent

Don't (for 1–2 days or as advised)

  • Use saunas, hot baths or hot yoga
  • Do intense exercise on the day
  • Use scrubs, peels or strong retinoids on sensitive skin
  • Pick at faint grid marks or small bumps
  • Book another heat-based treatment without asking

Your stage

Thermage in your 30s, 40s and 50s+

Thermage is not tied to one age, but what it can do changes as skin changes. The doctor looks at your skin, not your passport, yet these patterns are common.

30s: prevention and early laxity

Collagen production slows gradually from early adulthood. In the 30s, Thermage is mostly used to firm early softening along the jaw or eyelids and to keep skin feeling dense. Changes are subtle because there is less to correct.

40s: the most common time to start

Crepey eyelids, a softer jawline and less firm cheeks often appear together. Many people at this stage benefit from Thermage for the skin andHIFUfor deeper support, planned together.

50s and beyond, and around menopause

Falling estrogen around menopause is linked to thinner, drier and less elastic skin. Thermage can still firm the skin, but heavier sagging usually needs a combined plan, and expectations should be adjusted. Hormonal symptoms can be discussed with the clinic'smenopause careteam.

Evidence

Does Thermage work? What the research says

Monopolar radiofrequency has been used for skin tightening for more than two decades, and its safety record in large case series is good. The evidence that it works, however, comes mostly from small, uncontrolled studies that measure results with photographs or questionnaires. A systematic review of radiofrequency for skin laxity concluded that RF appears effective and works mainly by stimulating collagen, but that the methodological quality and level of evidence of the studies are low.

Honest limitations. Few Thermage studies have a control group, many involve small numbers or manufacturer support, and results are hard to measure objectively. Improvement is usually modest and varies widely between people. Thermage is a reasonable option for mild to moderate laxity when you prefer no downtime, not a substitute for surgery.

Choosing well

How to choose a Thermage clinic in Seoul

Thermage is widely advertised in Gangnam by shot count. Use these questions at any consultation, including ours:

  • Is it genuine Thermage FLX? Ask to see the new tip opened and the pulse count recorded.
  • Who decides the energy and passes? A physician should assess skin thickness and plan each area.
  • Will they adjust to my comfort? Energy should follow your feedback; pain is a safety signal.
  • Do they offer alternatives? If HIFU, threads or fillers suit you better, a good clinic says so.
  • Is the quote written and complete? Areas, pulses, tip and any add-ons should be clear before treatment.

What affects Thermage cost in Seoul?

The price depends on the tip and number of pulses, the areas treated (face, eyes, neck or body), and whether Thermage is combined withHIFUorskin boosters. Cosmetic treatments are not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance. You receive a written quote at your consultation before you decide.

Thermage: frequently asked questions

  • Does Thermage hurt?

Thermage feels like short bursts of deep heat, followed by cooling and vibration. Numbing cream is applied first, and the energy level is adjusted to your feedback, so most people find it tolerable. Bony areas such as the jawline and forehead usually feel stronger than the cheeks.

  • How long does Thermage last?

Results typically last 1–2 years. The main improvement builds over 2–6 months as new collagen forms, and it then fades slowly as your skin continues to age. Many people repeat Thermage about once a year, or combine it with Ulthera for deeper lifting.

  • How many Thermage sessions do I need?

Most people need only one session to see the full effect, because collagen keeps rebuilding for months afterward. A yearly maintenance session is common. Repeating Thermage at short intervals is not recommended, since the skin needs time to complete its healing response.

  • Can I wear makeup after Thermage?

Usually yes. Makeup can often be applied the same day or the next morning once any redness has settled. Use gentle cleansers and sunscreen, and avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for a day or two.

  • Is Thermage safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Thermage is not performed during pregnancy, because its safety has not been studied in pregnant women. Most clinics also postpone it while you are breastfeeding. The doctor can suggest gentle skin care to use in the meantime and plan lifting for after this period.

  • Can foreigners get Thermage in Seoul?

Yes. International patients can have Thermage at Hommage Clinic; bring your passport for registration. A single session fits easily into a short trip, and flying afterward is fine. Contact us before your visit to arrange language support and to plan any review for a later trip.

  • Can Thermage be used on the eyelids?

Yes. Thermage FLX has a small dedicated eye tip, and protective shields are placed over the eyes first. It can firm crepey lid skin and soften mild hooding, but it does not remove under-eye fat bags or replace eyelid surgery when there is a lot of excess skin.

  • Is Thermage or HIFU better for sagging?

For deeper sagging along the jaw and cheeks, HIFU usually does more because it reaches the SMAS layer. Thermage is better for loose, crepey skin and texture. Many people have both concerns, which is why the two are often combined.

  • Can Thermage cause fat loss or a dent?

Rarely. If an area receives too much heat, the fat underneath can shrink and leave a small dip. Modern devices adjust energy automatically, and the doctor reduces energy over lean areas and responds to your feedback. Tell the clinic straight away if you notice a new dent.

  • Can I have Thermage if I have fillers or threads?

Often yes, but tell the doctor what you have had and when. The doctor may adjust the energy over those areas or suggest leaving a gap after recent fillers or threads. People with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device should not have monopolar RF.

  • Is Thermage worth it?

It can be, if your expectations match what it does: a modest, gradual tightening of mild to moderate laxity with almost no downtime. Research suggests it is effective, but most studies are small and uncontrolled, and results vary. The doctor will tell you honestly if another option suits you better.

  • At what age should I start Thermage?

There is no fixed age. Many people start in their 40s, when crepey lids and a softer jawline appear, while some use it in their 30s for early laxity. It depends on your skin, not your birth year, and some people do not need it at all.

  • How long should I stay in Seoul for Thermage?

One or two days after treatment is usually enough. Allow about two hours at the clinic, including numbing time, and contact us by WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or the contact form to plan your dates and any language support.
