Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that binds water. Manufacturers link HA chains together (cross-linking) to make a gel that stays where it is placed for months instead of days. Once injected beneath the skin or vaginal lining, the gel takes up space and draws in water, which smooths and plumps the tissue above it. Are vaginal fillers safe? Who injects matters

Most side effects of HA filler are mild: swelling, tenderness, bruising and temporary unevenness. The rare serious events are the reason intimate filler should only be done by a licensed doctor who knows the anatomy. A biopsy-proven case published in the journal Thorax in 2010 described a woman who developed acute respiratory failure after hyaluronic acid was injected into the vagina by an unlicensed practitioner; the gel had reached the blood vessels of her lungs. In 2023, Hong Kong's Department of Health reported a woman in critical condition with pulmonary embolism after an intravaginal HA injection given by a suspected non-healthcare worker.

These cases are rare, but they show why conservative volumes, slow injection, blunt cannulas where suitable and immediate access to hyaluronidase matter. The US Food and Drug Administration notes that the most serious risk of any dermal filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel, and that it has not approved any injectable filler for body contouring or enhancement; filler use outside the face is off label.

    Most women feel pressure and brief stinging rather than sharp pain. Numbing cream is applied first, local anesthetic can be added, and many fillers contain lidocaine. Tenderness and swelling for a few days afterward are normal, and simple pain relief such as acetaminophen is usually enough.

  • When can I have sex after vaginal fillers?

    Most women are advised to wait about one week, or until swelling and tenderness have settled. Sex too soon can increase discomfort, move the filler or raise the risk of infection. If you feel pain during sex in the following weeks, stop and contact the clinic so the area can be checked.

  • Can vaginal fillers be reversed?

    Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It is used for lumps or unevenness, if you are unhappy with the result, and urgently if filler affects blood flow. Dissolving usually works within a day or two, although some swelling may follow.

  • Are vaginal fillers safe?

    HA fillers are widely used and side effects are usually mild, but intimate injection carries real risks, including lumps, infection and, rarely, filler blocking a blood vessel. An examination by an OB/GYN specialist first, conservative volumes, careful technique and following aftercare instructions all lower these risks.

  • Can I get vaginal fillers while pregnant or breastfeeding?

    No. Fillers are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because there is little safety data, and pregnancy changes blood flow and tissue in the genital area. It is usually advised to wait until you have finished breastfeeding and your body has recovered from birth.

  • Can foreigners get vaginal fillers in Seoul?

    Yes. International patients and foreign residents can book an appointment at Hommage Clinic; bring your passport for registration. Contact us before your visit to arrange language support. If you are traveling, plan to stay in Seoul for several days so swelling can settle and any early problem can be checked before you fly.

  • What is the difference between labia majora filler and vaginal filler?

    Labia majora filler adds volume under the skin of the outer lips, while vaginal wall filler places small amounts of gel beneath the lining of the vaginal entrance to add bulk. Both use hyaluronic acid, but the outer-lip treatment is more common and better described. See our labia majora augmentation page for details.

  • Do vaginal fillers tighten the vagina?

    Vaginal wall filler can add bulk at the entrance and some women report a sense of tightness, but it does not strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and the evidence comes from small studies. For marked laxity, laser vaginal tightening, pelvic floor training or vaginoplasty may suit better.

  • Can vaginal filler help with dryness or pain during sex?

    Small studies of hyaluronic acid injected into the vaginal lining reported less dryness and pain with sex in women with vaginal atrophy, but they were short and uncontrolled. Proven first options are vaginal moisturizers, lubricants and low-dose vaginal estrogen, described on our vaginal dryness treatment page.

  • What is the most serious risk of vaginal filler?

    The most serious risk of any filler is injection into a blood vessel. After vaginal injection, rare cases of filler reaching the lungs have been reported, mostly when an unlicensed person injected. Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain after filler needs an emergency department straight away.

  • Can I have vaginal filler during my period?

    It is better to schedule treatment for the week or two after your period ends. Bleeding makes it harder to keep the injection sites clean, and tampons should be avoided for about a week afterward. If your period starts early, pads can be used.

  • Will vaginal filler affect a future pregnancy or birth?

    Hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed, and there is no evidence that it prevents a later pregnancy, but data are limited. Treatment is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your obstetrician about any intimate filler, and if you plan a pregnancy soon, consider waiting.
