What is cosmetic gynecology?
Cosmetic gynecology, also called aesthetic gynecology or female genital cosmetic surgery, covers procedures that change the look, feel or function of the vulva (the external genitals) and the vagina. Some are done for physical reasons, such as labia that rub or pinch during exercise. Others are chosen for appearance or confidence, and many combine both goals.
It helps to start from one fact: vulvas vary widely in size, shape, symmetry and color, and that variation is normal. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advises that women considering these procedures first be told about normal anatomy, and that the decision should be their own. Surgical vs non-surgical options: which is right for you?
Surgery changes tissue directly and gives the longest-lasting effect. Injections and energy devices are less invasive but milder, and usually need repeating.
Surgical procedures
- Labiaplasty reduces or reshapes the inner lips (labia minora).

What happens at a cosmetic gynecology consultation?
A good consultation is a medical visit first. Dr. Park asks what bothers you, when it started and what you hope will change, then reviews your periods, births, menopause status, medicines and past surgery.
A gentle external exam, and an internal exam when the treatment involves the vagina, shows what is causing the concern. Infection, prolapse, skin conditions or hormone-related dryness can look like a cosmetic problem but need medical care instead, such as treatment for a vaginal infection . You then hear which options fit, what each can and cannot do, the recovery and the risks, and you receive a written quote. You do not have to decide on the day.
How long is recovery, and how should I plan travel?
Recovery depends on the treatment. After labia or vaginal surgery, most women return to desk work within a few days, but swelling takes 1–2 weeks to settle, and sex, tampons, swimming, cycling and hard exercise are usually avoided for about 4–6 weeks, sometimes longer after vaginoplasty. Laser sessions and injections typically need only a few days off sex and intense exercise.
If you are traveling to Seoul:
- Allow a gap between consultation and surgery if you can, so you have time to think.
- After surgery, stay in Seoul for at least 7 days so the wound can be checked before you fly.
- On long flights, walk the aisle regularly, drink water and wear loose clothing.
- Schedule surgery outside your period, and pack loose cotton underwear and pads.
- Ask for a written aftercare summary to show your doctor at home.
Risks and possible side effects
Every intimate procedure has risks, and some changes cannot be reversed. Common short-term effects are swelling, bruising, soreness and light bleeding or discharge. Less common complications include infection, wound separation, a collection of blood (hematoma), scarring, asymmetry, changes in sensation, and pain during sex if too much tissue is removed or tightened.
The quality of evidence also differs. Surgery for physical discomfort is well established. For vaginal lasers, PRP, the O-Shot, stem cells and G-spot amplification, evidence is limited or still emerging, and results vary between women. In 2018 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned against marketing energy devices for vaginal rejuvenation claims that were not supported by evidence. Fillers inside the vagina carry a rare risk of product entering a blood vessel.
Call the clinic promptly if you have heavy bleeding, fever, worsening pain, foul-smelling discharge or difficulty passing urine.
How to choose a cosmetic gynecology doctor in Korea
Check who will examine you and perform the procedure, not only the clinic's name. Useful questions to ask:
- Is the doctor a board-certified OB/GYN specialist (산부인과 전문의 in Korean), and will the same doctor perform the procedure?
- Will I have a full gynecologic assessment before any treatment is planned?
- What anesthesia is used, and what happens if a complication appears after I fly home?
- Can I have the risks, aftercare instructions and full cost in writing before I agree?
- Can I take time to decide, without pressure to book the same day?
Be cautious of claims that a treatment carries no risk, works for everyone or lasts forever, and of packages that bundle several intimate procedures before you have been examined.

Cosmetic gynecology in Korea: frequently asked questions
Is cosmetic gynecology safe?
Cosmetic gynecology is generally safe when an experienced gynecologist assesses you carefully and performs the procedure in a properly equipped clinic, but no procedure is free of risk. Swelling and soreness are common, and infection, scarring, asymmetry or altered sensation are possible. Evidence is strongest for surgery and still limited for lasers, PRP, stem cells and G-spot injections, so ask what is known about your chosen treatment.
How long should I stay in Korea after labiaplasty or vaginoplasty?
Plan to stay in Seoul for at least 7 days after surgery, and around 10–14 days after vaginoplasty if possible, so the wound can be checked before you fly. Does National Health Insurance cover cosmetic gynecology in Korea?
No. Procedures done for appearance are not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, and visitors without Korean coverage pay the clinic directly. Medical care such as infection treatment, Pap tests and some menopause care can be covered for enrolled patients. Do I need a pelvic exam before cosmetic gynecology?
Usually, yes. An exam shows whether your concern comes from anatomy, hormones or a condition such as infection or prolapse, and that changes which treatment makes sense. For external procedures such as labiaplasty, an external exam may be enough. If you have never had vaginal intercourse or prefer to avoid an internal exam, tell Dr. Park and she will adapt the assessment.
What is the difference between vaginal rejuvenation and vaginoplasty?
Vaginal rejuvenation is a broad term for treatments aimed at vaginal looseness, dryness or appearance, including lasers, injections and surgery. Vaginoplasty is one specific surgery that tightens the vaginal canal and entrance by repairing muscle and removing excess lining.
