Gold RF Microneedling for Acne, Pores and Sensitive Skin in Seoul
Gold RF microneedling is a type of RF microneedling that uses gold-plated, insulated needles, so radiofrequency heat is released only at the needle tips deep in the skin while the surface is largely protected. This makes it useful for active acne, oily skin with large pores, and darker or sensitive skin. At Hommage Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa decides whether it suits your skin.
Quick answer
Gold RF microneedling is RF microneedling with gold-plated, insulated needles that release heat only at the tips, deep in the skin, so the surface is largely protected. At Hommage Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Hwang Seonhwa uses it for mild active acne, oily skin with large pores and acne scars in darker or sensitive skin. A series is usually 3–5 sessions 3–6 weeks apart, with 1–2 days of pinkness.
Key takeaways
- “Gold RF” describes the needle type, not one brand: insulated, gold-plated, heat at the tip.
- Less surface heat means a lower pigment risk and shorter visible downtime than non-insulated needles.
- Oil may drop for several weeks after a session; acne control usually still needs medical skincare.
- Moderate to severe acne is treated with medication first; gold RF is an addition, not a replacement.

What is gold RF microneedling?
Gold RF microneedling is a form of RF microneedling in which each fine needle is gold-plated and insulated along its shaft. Only the tip is left uncoated, so the radiofrequency current is released at the chosen depth in the dermis instead of along the whole needle.
This design has two practical effects:
- Surface protection: the top layer of skin, where pigment cells sit, receives much less heat. This lowers the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which matters for Asian and darker skin.
- Biocompatibility: gold is very unlikely to cause metal allergy, which can help people with nickel sensitivity.
The heated zones at the needle tips trigger collagen remodeling and, at the right depth, can reduce the activity of overactive oil glands. "Gold RF" describes the needle type rather than one brand, and several devices use this design.
What does gold RF microneedling treat?
Gold RF microneedling is mainly chosen when you want RF microneedling's collagen effect with less surface injury. Common uses include:
- Active acne alongside scars: heat delivered at the depth of the oil glands may reduce oil production and inflammation, so mild acne and early scars can be treated in the same course. Moderate to severe acne still needs acne treatment or medication first.
- Oily skin and enlarged pores: often improved over a series. See also sebum control therapy .
- Acne scars in darker or sensitive skin: rolling and shallow boxcar scars, with a lower pigment risk than ablative laser. Scar-specific planning is explained in RF microneedling for scars .
- Texture and fine lines in people who want shorter visible downtime.
It does little for brown pigment such as melasma or for marked sagging, which need different treatments.
Gold RF vs standard RF microneedling vs classic microneedling: which is right for you?
All three create micro-channels that stimulate collagen. They differ in how much heat reaches the surface and how strong each session is.
- Gold (insulated) RF microneedling: heat mainly at the tips; least surface injury and usually the shortest visible downtime. Suited to active acne, oily skin and pigment-prone skin.
- Non-insulated RF microneedling: heat along the whole needle, giving a broader effect toward the surface. Often used for moderate scars and texture in skin that tolerates it.
- Classic microneedling: no heat at all; gentle, but usually needs more sessions for scars.
Deep or tethered scars often need more than any needling method alone, such as subcision for rolling scars or TCA CROSS for ice pick scars.
What happens during a gold RF microneedling session?
A visit usually takes about 1.5 hours, most of it numbing time.
- Your skin is cleansed. If you have whiteheads or blackheads, gentle extraction may be done first.
- Numbing cream is applied for about 40–60 minutes, then the skin is disinfected.
- The physician treats each area with a single-use sterile gold needle tip, choosing depth by goal: deeper over scars, at the oil-gland level for acne and pores.
- The skin is cooled and soothed, and you receive written aftercare instructions.
Most people feel deep warmth and pressure, with less surface stinging than non-insulated needles.
How long is the recovery after gold RF microneedling?
Recovery is usually mild. Expect pinkness for 1–2 days and tiny dots where the needles entered for a few days. Most people return to work the next day and can wear makeup after about 24 hours.
Oil and breakouts may calm within a few weeks, while scars and pores improve gradually over 3–6 months as collagen remodels. A series of 3–5 sessions is typical. Scars become shallower rather than disappearing, and acne control usually needs ongoing skincare or occasional maintenance.
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer; avoid scrubs, retinoids and acids for 3–5 days.
- Skip saunas, swimming and hard workouts for 1–2 days.
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day.
- Do not pick at dots, spots or flakes.
Risks and possible side effects
Insulated needles lower some risks, but gold RF microneedling is still a medical procedure. Dr. Hwang will explain these risks before you consent:
- Redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding or small bruises , usually short-lived.
- Grid-pattern dots or small scabs for several days.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation : less likely than with surface-heating treatments, but still possible in darker skin or with sun exposure.
- Acne flare or milia in the first weeks.
- Infection or cold sore reactivation ; an antiviral may be advised if you get cold sores.
- Rarely, burns or scarring .
Contact the clinic if redness or pain increases after the second or third day, or if you notice pus, blisters, spreading redness or a fever.
Gold RF microneedling at Hommage Clinic
Hommage Clinic is a women's health and skin clinic in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station. Your skin is assessed by a physician, who decides whether insulated gold needles, standard RF microneedling or another treatment suits your goals and sets the depth for each area. For acne that flares with your cycle or comes with irregular periods, our OB/GYN team can check for hormonal causes such asPCOSunder the same roof. See ourskin and aestheticsservices for related options.
Cost depends on the area, the number of sessions and any combined treatments. Cosmetic RF microneedling is not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, although medical acne care may be for enrolled patients. You receive a written quote before treatment, and walk-ins are welcome during opening hours.
Mechanism
How gold RF microneedling works on acne and oil glands
Acne starts in the oil gland and hair follicle, which sit in the dermis below the surface. Gold RF microneedling uses insulated needles so the radiofrequency heat forms a small zone right at the tip. When the depth is set to the level of the oil glands, that heat can reduce their activity for a period, while the surface layer, where pigment cells live, stays largely untouched.
The same tip-only heating also starts collagen remodeling around early scars. That is why one course can address oiliness, mild breakouts and shallow scars together, which is common in adult acne. The diagram compares gold (insulated) needles with standard non-insulated needles at the same depth.
Compare
Gold RF microneedling vs acne laser vs medication: where it fits
Gold RF microneedling is one of several tools for acne-prone skin, and it works best when it is matched to the right job. Medication treats the cause of breakouts across the whole face every day. Light and laser treatments calm inflammation and redness. Gold RF adds something the others do less well: it treats oil glands at depth and remodels early scars in the same session, with a low risk of pigment change.
Evidence on acne itself is still limited. In a 2013 Korean study of 20 adults, one full-face session lowered oil production for up to eight weeks, but clinical improvement peaked at two weeks and most patients were back to baseline by week eight. That is why gold RF is usually planned as a series alongside skincare or medication, not on its own.

Is it for you?
Who is a good candidate for gold RF microneedling?
The best results come when the skin problem matches what insulated needles do well. Gold RF is usually considered when you have more than one of these concerns at once, and when surface-heating treatments are a worse fit for your skin.
Oily skin, large pores
Especially on the nose and cheeks, with frequent small breakouts.
Mild acne plus early scars
Breakouts and shallow scars treated in the same course.
Pigment-prone skin
Skin that has darkened after lasers or peels before.
Severe or cystic acne
Needs prescription treatment; gold RF may come later.
Pregnancy or implants
Postponed in pregnancy; avoided with pacemakers or implanted devices.

Timeline
Gold RF microneedling results timeline: oil, acne and scars
Different concerns respond on different timescales. Oiliness and small breakouts can calm within weeks of a session, but that effect tends to fade if nothing else is done, which is why sessions are repeated and combined with skincare. Pores and scars change slowly, through collagen remodeling over several months. Knowing this helps you judge progress fairly.
Before your session
How to prepare for gold RF microneedling
Preparing your skin helps it tolerate treatment and lowers the chance of irritation or darkening afterward. You receive personal instructions after your consultation, but most people are asked to:
- Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs a few days before the session.
- Avoid tanning and strong sun for about two weeks beforehand.
- Tell the clinic about cold sores, so an antiviral can be considered.
- Mention any metal allergy, implanted device, pregnancy or recent isotretinoin.
- Keep taking other prescribed acne medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Arrive with clean skin and no makeup, and allow time for numbing cream.

Aftercare
Gold RF microneedling aftercare for acne-prone skin
Acne-prone skin needs aftercare that heals the treated area without clogging pores. Heavy creams, picking and touching can all trigger new breakouts in the days after a session. You receive written instructions and can send the clinic photos if anything worries you.
Do
- Use a gentle, low-pH cleanser and a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer
- Apply SPF 30+ daily
- Change pillowcases and clean your phone screen
- Continue prescribed acne medicines unless told otherwise
- Contact the clinic about pus, blisters or worsening redness
Don't
- Squeeze spots or pick dots and flakes
- Use scrubs, retinoids or acids for 3–5 days
- Apply heavy oils or thick creams
- Use saunas, pools or do hard workouts for 1–2 days
- Wear makeup for about the first 24 hours
Evidence
Does gold RF microneedling work? What the research says
Research on RF microneedling as a whole is growing, and reviews support it for acne scars, skin rejuvenation and acne. Studies of insulated needles specifically for acne are fewer and smaller, and they show that the oil-reducing effect is real but can be temporary. The cards below summarize what has been reported, with the limits stated plainly.

Choosing well
How to choose a clinic for gold RF microneedling
“Gold” appears in many device and package names, so ask what is actually being used and why. Use these questions at any consultation, including ours:
- Are the needles truly insulated? Ask whether the shaft is coated and only the tip delivers heat.
- Who sets depth for acne vs scars? A physician should choose depth by goal, area by area.
- Is acne medication part of the plan? For active acne, device treatment alone rarely lasts.
- Are tips single-use and sterile? Ask to see a new tip opened.
- Do they check hormones if acne is cyclical? Adult acne can be linked to PCOS or other hormonal causes.
- Is there a written plan and quote? Including the number of sessions and maintenance.
What affects the cost of gold RF microneedling?
The total depends on the area treated, the number of sessions, whether maintenance is planned, and whether it is combined with acne care such as acne laser treatment or sebum control therapy. Cosmetic RF microneedling is not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, although medical acne care may be for enrolled patients. You receive a written quote before treatment.

Gold RF microneedling: frequently asked questions
What does gold RF microneedling do?
Gold RF microneedling uses insulated, gold-plated needles to deliver radiofrequency heat at a set depth in the skin while largely sparing the surface. Over a series of sessions it can reduce oiliness and mild acne, refine pores and soften acne scars, with a lower risk of pigment change than treatments that heat the surface.
Is gold RF microneedling better than regular RF microneedling?
It is not better for everyone; it suits different skin. Insulated gold needles protect the surface, so they are often chosen for active acne, oily skin and darker or sensitive skin. Non-insulated needles give a broader heating effect that some moderate scars and textures respond to. Your doctor chooses based on your skin and goals. See RF microneedling.
Can gold RF microneedling treat active acne?
It can help mild to moderate acne by delivering heat at the depth of the oil glands, which may reduce oil production and inflammation over a few sessions. It is not a substitute for medical treatment of moderate to severe acne, which usually needs prescription medication first. Combining both often gives steadier results.
Does gold RF microneedling hurt?
Most people find it tolerable with numbing cream applied for 40–60 minutes. You feel deep warmth and pressure with each pulse, and usually less surface stinging than with non-insulated needles. Bony areas and deeper settings feel stronger, and the energy can be adjusted if needed.
How many gold RF microneedling sessions will I need?
A series of 3–5 sessions spaced about 3–6 weeks apart is typical. Oil and acne may improve after the first one or two sessions, while scars and pores change more gradually over several months. Some people with acne-prone skin choose occasional maintenance sessions.
Can foreigners get gold RF microneedling in Seoul?
Yes. International patients and foreign residents can book gold RF microneedling at Hommage Clinic; bring your passport for registration. Downtime is usually short, but plan for a few days of mild redness and allow 3–6 weeks between sessions if you want a series. Please contact us before your visit to arrange language support.
How long does the oil-reducing effect of gold RF last?
It is often temporary. In a Korean study of 20 adults, oil output fell sharply two weeks after one session and stayed below baseline until about week eight, while acne improvement faded by then in most patients. That is why sessions are repeated and combined with skincare or medication.
Is the gold coating important, or is it marketing?
The key feature is that the needle shaft is insulated, so heat is released only at the tip. Gold plating is one way to do this and is very unlikely to cause metal allergy. There is little evidence that gold itself improves results beyond the insulation.
Can gold RF microneedling shrink pores?
It can make enlarged pores look smaller over a series, by reducing oil and tightening the surrounding skin through new collagen. Pores do not disappear, and results build over 3–6 months. See also pore tightening laser.
Can I continue my acne medication during gold RF treatment?
Usually yes for most topical and oral acne medicines, but strong topicals such as retinoids are paused for a few days around each session. Isotretinoin needs special timing, so tell your doctor about every medicine you take.
Is gold RF microneedling safe for darker or Asian skin?
It is often chosen for these skin types because the insulated shaft keeps heat away from the pigment layer. Temporary darkening is still possible, especially with sun exposure, so daily sunscreen and adjusted settings are important.
Will gold RF microneedling cause a breakout?
A mild flare or tiny white bumps (milia) can appear in the first weeks, especially in acne-prone skin. Using light, non-comedogenic products and avoiding picking lowers this risk. Contact the clinic if spots become painful or contain pus.
Can my acne be hormonal, and does that change the plan?
Acne that flares with your cycle or comes with irregular periods or excess hair can be linked to hormonal conditions such as PCOS. Our OB/GYN team can check for this, because treating the hormonal cause usually makes skin treatments last longer.
