Body Fat Dissolving Injections in Seoul: Abdomen, Arms and Back
Body fat dissolving injections place a fat-disrupting solution into small, stubborn pockets such as bra-line rolls, the lower abdomen or the upper arms, so the body gradually clears some fat cells. At Hommage Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Kim Hyunbin checks whether injections or a body device such as ONDA suits your area, and explains the product and its evidence before treatment.
Quick answer
Body fat dissolving injections place a fat-disrupting solution into a small, soft pocket of fat such as a bra-line roll, lower-abdomen pouch or upper arm, and the body clears some fat cells over the following weeks. Sessions take 20–40 minutes, several are usually needed 2–6 weeks apart, and changes are modest. At Hommage Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Kim Hyunbin checks whether injections or a device such as ONDA suits your area and tells you exactly which product would be used. The only approved fat-dissolving drug, deoxycholic acid, is approved for under-chin fat; body use is off-label with limited evidence.
Key takeaways
- Best for small, pinchable pockets that a device applicator cannot fit well.
- Evidence for body areas is weaker than for the chin; expect centimeters, not kilograms.
- Ask what is being injected; unregulated mixtures have been linked to infections.
- Swelling, bruising and tenderness for several days are normal; you can work the same day.

- Understand that results are modest and build over several sessions
Wait or choose another option if you
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have an infection, broken skin or an active skin condition in the area
- Have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, unless your doctor agrees
- Want to lose weight or treat a large area of fat
How do fat dissolving injections work on the body?
Body fat dissolving injections deliver a solution into the fat layer that damages fat cell walls, and the body then clears the broken-down fat over several weeks. The aim is a modest reduction in one small area, not weight loss.
The most widely studied ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is approved in many countries only for fat under the chin. Using it on the abdomen, arms or back is off-label, and published body studies are small. Other products sold as lipolysis or “fat-melting” injections, such as phosphatidylcholine mixtures or multi-ingredient blends, vary between clinics and have limited high-quality evidence. A responsible clinic tells you exactly what is being injected and how much evidence supports it. For the chin and lower face, see fat dissolving injections for the face , which has stronger evidence and a different plan.
Which body areas can be treated?
Injections are most suitable for small, defined pockets of soft fat that are easy to pinch. Commonly treated areas include:
- Bra-line and upper back rolls
- The lower abdomen, especially a small pocket below the navel
- Flanks (love handles)
- Upper arms
- Inner thighs and the inner knee
Larger areas need more product spread over more injection points, and there are safe limits to how much can be given in one session. For a whole abdomen or a large volume of fat, a body device or surgical liposuction is usually more practical. Loose skin and the dimpled look of cellulite also need different approaches; see RF body tightening and cellulite reduction therapy .
What happens during a session?
A session usually takes 20–40 minutes and you can go back to normal activity the same day. A typical visit runs like this:
- The doctor examines and pinches the area, then marks it with a grid so the product is spread evenly.
- The skin is cleaned thoroughly, and numbing cream or ice may be applied.
- Small amounts of solution are injected into the fat layer through fine needles.
- The area may be gently massaged or cooled, and you are given aftercare instructions.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. Avoid intense exercise, saunas and alcohol for a day or two, and keep the injection points clean.
How many sessions do you need, and how long do results last?
Most body areas need several sessions, and each one produces a small, gradual change over the following weeks. The interval depends on the product and is often about 2–6 weeks. Your doctor reviews the area before each session and stops when further change is unlikely.
Fat cells that are destroyed do not return, so the change is long-lasting if your weight stays stable. Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain. Results are usually measured in centimeters of contour rather than kilograms, so photographs and tape measurements at the start help you judge progress fairly.
Risks and possible side effects
Swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness are expected after body injections and usually settle within several days to two weeks. Temporary numbness, itching and small firm lumps that soften over weeks are also common.
Less common but important risks include:
- Infection , including slow-growing skin infections that have been linked to poorly sterilized or unregulated injection products.
- Skin injury , such as ulceration or scarring, if product is placed too shallow or into a blood vessel.
- Lasting lumps or contour irregularities , especially when large volumes are used.
- Allergic reactions to an ingredient in the solution.
Contact the clinic promptly if you develop increasing pain, warmth and spreading redness, fever, discharge, an open sore, or lumps that become painful weeks after treatment.
Injections vs body-contouring devices: which suits you?
Injections suit small, awkward pockets; devices usually suit broader areas such as the whole lower abdomen or flanks. The main non-surgical options compare like this:
- Fat dissolving injections: precise for small spots, but several sessions and some swelling.
- Heat-based devices such as microwave or radiofrequency: treat wider areas with little downtime, and may firm skin a little.
- Cryolipolysis: cools a pinchable bulge; see CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) .
- Muscle stimulation: tones muscle under the fat rather than removing fat; see EMS body sculpting .
Some people combine a device for the main area with injections for small leftover pockets.
Body fat dissolving at Hommage Clinic
Hommage Clinic is a walk-in-friendly women's health and skin clinic in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station. Dr. Kim Hyunbin assesses your area first and explains whether injections, a device or a combination is more likely to help. For broader areas, the clinic uses ONDA, which delivers microwave energy to the deep fat layer while cooling the skin, and Tune Body radiofrequency. You are told which injectable product would be used, what it contains and its approval status before treatment.
Because women's health care andskin and aesthetic treatmentsshare one clinic, changes in body shape after pregnancy, with PCOS or around menopause can be reviewed alongside your gynecology care. Body contouring is cosmetic and is not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance. Cost depends on the product, the size of the area and the number of sessions, and you receive a written quote before treatment.
Candidates
Are you a good candidate for body fat dissolving injections?
The best results are seen in people whose concern is a single, small, soft pocket that has stayed despite a stable weight. Try the pinch test: if you can easily hold the fat between thumb and finger and it is no bigger than your palm, injections may be an option. If the area is firm, very broad, or mainly loose skin, other approaches are usually better.
Things Dr. Kim checks at your assessment
- How thick and soft the fat is, and whether skin is firm enough to shrink back
- Your weight history, and conditions such as PCOS or thyroid problems that affect weight
- Blood thinners, bleeding problems, allergies and previous reactions to injections
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and plans for pregnancy
- Your timeline, since several sessions weeks apart are usually needed

Mechanism
How do fat dissolving injections work? From injection to clearance
Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid, similar to the one your body uses to break down dietary fat. Injected into the fat layer, it disrupts the outer membranes of fat cells so they break open. This triggers local inflammation, which is why the area swells and feels tender, and over the following weeks the body's clean-up cells remove the debris. Some new collagen may form in the treated layer.
Because deoxycholic acid is not selective for fat, it can also damage skin, muscle or nerves if it is placed too shallow or too deep. That is why depth, spacing and total dose matter, and why the product is approved only for one well-studied area, the under-chin fat. Phosphatidylcholine mixtures and other "lipolysis cocktails" are thought to act in a similar way, but their contents vary and their evidence is weaker.
Know your product
Deoxycholic acid vs PPC vs "lipolysis cocktails"
In Korea and elsewhere, many products are sold as fat-dissolving or fat-melting injections. They are not interchangeable. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2019 policy statement notes that deoxycholic acid is the only injectable approved in the US for fat reduction, and that mesotherapy mixtures are not approved for any use. It recommends that patients are told how little evidence exists outside under-chin fat and that the exact substances and doses are recorded.
Deoxycholic acid
- Approved for under-chin fat
- Body use is off-label
- Strong swelling reaction
Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) mixes
- Often combined with deoxycholate
- Quality of studies is lower
- Contents vary by supplier
Multi-ingredient cocktails
- Mixed herbal or enzyme blends
- Little controlled research
- Ask for the exact ingredients

Compare
Fat dissolving injections vs CoolSculpting vs ONDA: matching method to area
The size and shape of the fat pocket decide the method more than anything else. Injections can follow any small, irregular shape, which is why they are used for bra-line rolls, the inner knee or a small pouch below the navel. Cryolipolysis needs a fold that fits an applicator cup. Heat-based devices such as ONDA, body HIFU or non-invasive laser work well on broad, flatter areas and can firm skin slightly. The diagram below maps typical areas to methods.
| Compare | Injections | Cryolipolysis | Heat devices (e.g. ONDA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best area | Small, irregular pockets | Pinchable bulges | Broader areas, mild laxity |
| Sessions | Several, 2–6 weeks apart | 1–2 per area | Depends on device |
| Downtime | Swelling and bruising for days | Numbness for weeks | Minimal |
| At Hommage Clinic | After assessment | Not listed | ONDA, Tune Body |
Schedule
Body fat dissolving injection sessions: a typical schedule
Each session produces a small change that shows over the following weeks, so treatment is planned as a series with a review before each step. The interval depends on the product. Stopping is part of the plan: when measurements stop changing, more sessions are unlikely to help.

Aftercare
After body fat dissolving injections: do's and don'ts
Swelling is part of how the treatment works, so the area may look bigger for a few days before it looks smaller. Good aftercare keeps you comfortable and lowers the risk of infection at the injection points.
Do
- Wear loose, soft clothing over the area
- Use a wrapped cold pack for 10–15 minutes at a time if sore
- Keep injection points clean and dry for the first day
- Walk and keep normal daily activity
- Keep a stable weight between sessions
- Send photos if redness spreads or pain increases
Don't
- Do intense exercise for a day or two
- Use saunas, hot baths or drink alcohol for 1–2 days
- Massage hard or squeeze lumps
- Book an event where the area shows for a week
- Have injections from unknown or unlabeled products
- Ignore fever, discharge or an open sore
Evidence
Do body fat dissolving injections work? What the research says
The strongest evidence for injection lipolysis comes from the under-chin area, where four randomized, placebo-controlled trials supported approval of deoxycholic acid. For the body, the evidence is much thinner. Professional bodies such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons describe body-contouring studies as limited and mostly without proper control groups, and this is why the change on the body should be seen as modest and uncertain.
Phase III chin trials
Randomized, placebo-controlled trials supported deoxycholic acid for under-chin fat.
ASPS policy statement, 2019US approval, chin only
Deoxycholic acid is the only FDA-approved injectable for fat reduction.
ASPS policy statement, 2019Body-contouring evidence
Limited studies; one 20-woman thigh study found no girth difference vs untreated thighs.
ASPS policy statement, 2019Approved mesotherapy mixes
Mesotherapy mixtures are not approved for any use in the US.

Body fat dissolving injections in Seoul for international patients
Because body injections usually need several sessions weeks apart, a single short trip often allows only one session. That can still be worthwhile for a small pocket, but plan realistically: discuss whether to repeat on a later visit, or whether a single-visit device suits your schedule better.
- Message us by WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or the contact form with the area, your height and weight and your travel dates; ask for language support if needed.
- Mention blood thinners, bleeding problems, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Bring your passport for registration and a list of your medicines.
- Avoid booking a beach day or long hike within a few days of treatment while swelling and bruising settle.
- Ask for the product name and dose in writing to show any doctor at home.

Choosing well
How to choose a fat dissolving injection clinic in Seoul
Fat dissolving injections are widely advertised in Seoul, sometimes with brand names that do not say what is inside. Use these questions anywhere, including at Hommage Clinic:
- What exactly is in the injection? Ask for the product name, ingredients and approval status.
- Who injects it? A doctor should assess and treat, with sterile technique.
- Is the area right for injections? Small pockets suit injections; broad areas may suit a device.
- How many sessions and what total dose? There are safe limits per session.
- Are side effects explained? Including infection risk and what to do if it happens.
- Is the plan written down? With a quote and the product recorded in your file.
What affects the cost of body fat dissolving injections in Seoul?
Cost depends on the product, the amount needed for the size of the area, the number of areas and the number of sessions. Approved products usually cost more than generic mixtures. Body contouring is cosmetic and not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance; at Hommage Clinic you receive a written quote before treatment.

Body fat dissolving injections: frequently asked questions
Do fat dissolving injections work on belly fat?
They can reduce a small, soft pocket of fat on the lower abdomen, but they do not affect deep belly fat around the organs and are not designed for large areas. Evidence for body use is more limited than for the chin. For a broader abdomen, a body device or, for larger volumes, surgery is usually more practical.
How many sessions do body fat dissolving injections need?
Most body areas need several sessions, often spaced about 2–6 weeks apart depending on the product. The exact number depends on the size of the pocket and how you respond. Your doctor measures and photographs the area at each visit and stops when further change is unlikely.
Do body fat dissolving injections hurt?
Most people feel stinging or burning for several minutes after the injections, followed by tenderness and swelling for a few days. Numbing cream, ice and fine needles make it more comfortable. Bruising is common, so avoid scheduling treatment just before a beach trip or an event where the area will be visible.
Are fat dissolving injections a way to lose weight?
No. They remove a small amount of fat from one spot and barely change your weight. They suit people near their goal weight with a stubborn pocket. If weight has changed without explanation, a medical check, including thyroid or hormone tests, is worth doing first.
Can I have body fat dissolving injections after having a baby?
Yes, once you have finished breastfeeding and your weight has settled, which for many women takes several months after birth. Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you have a gap in the abdominal muscles or loose skin after pregnancy, other treatments may help more than fat reduction.
Can foreigners get body fat dissolving injections in Seoul?
Yes. Visitors and foreign residents can book an assessment at Hommage Clinic in Gangnam. Walk-ins are welcome, or book ahead for a set time; bring your passport for registration. Because sessions are weeks apart, discuss your travel dates at your first visit, and contact us before your visit to arrange language support.
Is deoxycholic acid approved for the body?
No. Deoxycholic acid was approved in the US in 2015 for fat under the chin, based on four randomized placebo-controlled trials. Using it on the abdomen, arms or back is off-label, and professional bodies caution that evidence outside the chin is limited. You should be told this before treatment.
What is the difference between PPC and deoxycholic acid injections?
Deoxycholic acid is a single, well-studied ingredient. Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) products are usually mixtures that also contain deoxycholate, and their evidence is of lower quality. Multi-ingredient "lipolysis cocktails" vary even more. Always ask for the exact ingredients.
Why does the area swell after fat dissolving injections?
The solution breaks fat cell membranes, which causes local inflammation. That swelling is part of how the treatment works and usually settles within several days to two weeks. A wrapped cold pack and loose clothing help; contact the clinic if swelling keeps increasing or the area becomes hot and red.
Are fat dissolving injections safe?
Swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary lumps are common. Less often, skin ulcers, lasting irregularities or infections occur; atypical mycobacterial infections have been linked to outbreaks with poorly controlled products. Choosing a known product, sterile technique and a doctor who records the dose lowers these risks.
Can fat dissolving injections treat cellulite?
Not reliably. Cellulite is caused mainly by fibrous bands pulling the skin down, not just by fat, and professional reviews find little good evidence for injection lipolysis on cellulite. See cellulite reduction therapy for options that target its structure.
Injections or a device for my stomach?
For a small, soft pouch below the navel, injections can work. For the whole lower abdomen or flanks, a device such as ONDA, cryolipolysis or body HIFU usually treats the area more evenly with fewer sessions. Some people combine a device with injections for leftover pockets.
When will I see results?
Swelling can hide the change for the first one to two weeks. A small difference usually becomes visible several weeks after each session, and the full effect of a course is judged at the final review, comparing photos and measurements with your starting point.
