CoolSculpting (Cryolipolysis) in Seoul: How Fat Freezing Works
CoolSculpting is a brand of cryolipolysis, a non-surgical treatment that cools a pinchable bulge of fat so that some fat cells die and are cleared by the body over the following weeks. Hommage Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul does not list a cryolipolysis device; instead, Dr. Kim Hyunbin assesses your goal and explains comparable body-contouring options such as ONDA and Tune Body.
Quick answer
CoolSculpting is a brand of cryolipolysis, a non-surgical treatment that cools a pinchable bulge of fat so that some fat cells die and are cleared over 2–3 months. A review of 19 studies found average fat-layer reductions of about 10–28% in the treated spot. Hommage Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul does not list a cryolipolysis device; Dr. Kim Hyunbin assesses your area and explains whether the clinic's heat-based options, ONDA or Tune Body, or another route suits your goal better.
Key takeaways
- Fat freezing reduces a modest amount of fat in one spot; it is not weight loss and does not tighten skin.
- Results start from about 3 weeks and are fullest at about 2–3 months.
- The rare side effect to know about is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where treated fat grows instead of shrinking.
- If you came looking for CoolSculpting, you can still get an honest comparison with heat-based options at your assessment.

- Mainly want to lose weight or reduce deep belly fat around the organs
What is cryolipolysis and how does CoolSculpting work?
Cryolipolysis reduces a small, localized area of fat by cooling it. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin, nerves and muscle around them, so carefully controlled cooling can injure fat cells while leaving surrounding tissue intact.
During treatment, an applicator draws the bulge between cooling panels, or rests flat against it, and holds it at a set low temperature for a fixed time. Over the following weeks the injured fat cells break down slowly and the immune system clears them. CoolSculpting is one brand name for this technology; other cryolipolysis devices work on the same principle. It reduces fat thickness in one spot. It does not tighten skin, and it is not a weight-loss treatment.
Who is a good candidate for fat freezing?
Good candidates are people close to their goal weight who have a specific bulge that has not shrunk with diet and exercise. The fat must be soft and pinchable, because the applicator needs to hold it closely.
Commonly treated areas include the lower abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, bra-line and back fat, and the area under the chin. Fat that sits deep inside the abdomen, around the organs, is not affected. If loose skin is your main concern, RF body tightening may help more than fat reduction. If you have a larger volume of fat to remove, surgical liposuction is usually more effective. Hommage Clinic does not perform liposuction, but our guide on choosing a liposuction clinic in Seoul explains what to check before booking elsewhere.
What happens during a cryolipolysis session?
A session is done lying or sitting comfortably, and you can read or use your phone during it. A typical visit runs like this:
- The area is assessed, marked and photographed so changes can be compared later.
- A protective gel pad is placed on the skin to shield it from cold injury.
- The applicator is fitted and cooling starts. Most people feel intense cold, pulling and aching for the first 5–10 minutes, then the area goes numb.
- After about 35–60 minutes the applicator is removed. The fat feels firm and cold, and it is usually massaged for a few minutes.
You can return to work and normal activity the same day. Several areas can be treated in one visit, which lengthens the appointment.
How long does it take to see results, and how long do they last?
Results appear gradually: changes usually start at about 3 weeks and are fullest at around 2–3 months, as the body clears the treated fat. Clinical studies commonly report a reduction of roughly one-fifth of the fat thickness in the treated spot after one session, but results vary and some people see little change.
Fat cells that are cleared do not return. The remaining fat cells can still enlarge if you gain weight, including in the treated area, so a stable weight keeps the result. A second session on the same area is usually planned only after the first result can be judged. Aftercare is simple: normal activity, gentle massage if advised, and a call to the clinic if pain or skin changes worry you.
Risks and possible side effects of cryolipolysis
Most side effects are temporary, but some are uncommon and need medical attention. Common effects include redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, firmness and numbness in the treated area, which can last several weeks. Some people feel deep aching or nerve-type pain starting a few days after treatment, most often on the abdomen; it usually settles within one to two weeks.
- Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH): a rare effect in which the treated fat becomes larger and firmer instead of smaller, usually noticed 2–6 months later. It does not go away on its own and is generally corrected with liposuction once it has stabilized. Early estimates put it at about 1 in 20,000 treatment cycles, but later reports suggest it may be more frequent than first thought.
- Cold injury: rarely, blistering, frostbite-like damage or lasting skin darkening.
- Under the chin: a temporary feeling of fullness in the throat.
See a doctor promptly if you notice blisters, skin turning white or dark purple, severe or worsening pain, or an area that grows firmer and larger weeks after treatment.
Cryolipolysis vs other non-surgical fat reduction
All non-surgical fat reduction aims to injure a modest amount of fat in one area; they differ in the energy used. Cryolipolysis uses cold. Heat-based devices use microwave, radiofrequency or laser energy, while some machines use ultrasound, and injections dissolve fat chemically.
- Heat-based devices warm the fat layer and can also tighten skin a little. See laser lipolysis for how laser options compare.
- Ultrasound devices use sound waves to disrupt fat; evidence varies widely between machines. See ultrasound cavitation .
- Injections suit small pockets that an applicator cannot reach, such as bra-line rolls. See fat dissolving injections for the body .
None of these replaces surgery for larger volumes, and none treats loose skin on its own.
Body contouring at Hommage Clinic
Hommage Clinic is a walk-in-friendly women's health and skin clinic in Gangnam, a short walk from Sinnonhyeon Station. The clinic does not list CoolSculpting or another cryolipolysis device. The cryo care listed at the clinic is a cooling step that soothes skin after face treatments, not fat freezing.
For localized fat, the clinic uses ONDA, which delivers microwave energy (marketed as Coolwaves) to the deep fat layer while cooling the skin surface, and Tune Body, the body treatment in the same Tune line as the clinic's Tune Face. Dr. Kim recommends a device only after assessing your area. Because women's health care andskin and aesthetic treatmentsare under one roof, body changes after pregnancy or around menopause can be discussed together with a gynecology check. Body contouring is cosmetic and is not covered by Korea's National Health Insurance. Cost depends on the device, the number of areas and sessions, and you receive a written quote before treatment.
Treatment areas
CoolSculpting areas: stomach, flanks, thighs, arms and chin
Cryolipolysis works only where the applicator can make good contact with a soft fold of fat. That is why the lower abdomen, flanks and inner thighs are the most commonly treated areas, while firm, fibrous fat or very thin layers respond poorly. Larger areas may need more than one applicator placement in the same visit, and two sessions on the same area gave a larger reduction than one in a thigh study (about 28.5% vs 19.7% by caliper).
The cards below show common areas and what to expect. For small rolls that an applicator cannot hold, such as the bra line, fat dissolving injections may fit better.
Lower abdomen
The most studied area. Often one or two applicator placements per session.
Flanks
Soft love handles that pinch easily usually suit vacuum applicators well.
Inner and outer thighs
Outer-thigh studies showed a bigger change after two sessions than after one.
Upper arms
Small applicators for a pinchable back-of-arm area; loose skin is not improved.
Back and bra line
Possible if the roll is soft enough to hold; small pockets may suit injections.
Under the chin
Small applicator; a temporary feeling of throat fullness can occur.

Mechanism
How does CoolSculpting work? The science of fat freezing
Fat cells are richer in lipids that stiffen at temperatures well above freezing, so they are more vulnerable to cold than skin, nerves and muscle. In cryolipolysis, the applicator draws the bulge in with gentle suction and extracts heat until the fat reaches a low, controlled temperature, discussed in reviews as around 4°C. The suction also slows blood flow through the fold, adding a short period of cold, low-oxygen stress.
The injured fat cells do not burst on the day. Instead they undergo a slow, programmed cell death. An inflammatory response builds and peaks at about 30 days, and white blood cells called macrophages clear the damaged cells and their fat, largely within 3 months. This is why the change appears gradually and why liver tests and blood fats were not found to change in published studies.
Compare
CoolSculpting vs ONDA and other heat-based body contouring
Many people searching for CoolSculpting in Seoul are really asking a simpler question: what is the gentlest way to reduce one stubborn area? Fat can be injured by cold or by heat. Cold needs a fold the applicator can hold, so it suits soft, pinchable bulges. Heat-based devices, such as microwave (ONDA), radiofrequency or focused ultrasound, are applied to a flat surface and can also firm the skin a little, which suits areas where mild looseness is part of the concern.
The evidence for each is similar in one respect: all produce modest, measurable reductions in a localized area, and none is a substitute for surgery when there is a lot of fat. Since Hommage Clinic does not list a cryolipolysis device, this comparison is meant to help you weigh options honestly, wherever you choose to be treated.
| Compare | Cryolipolysis | Heat-based devices |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Soft, pinchable bulges | Flatter areas, or fat plus mild looseness |
| Feels like | Intense cold and pulling, then numbness | Warmth or deep heat; skin may be cooled |
| Skin firming | No | Some, depending on device |
| Rare specific risk | Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia; cold injury | Burns or blisters if energy is too high |
| At Hommage Clinic | Not listed | ONDA and Tune Body listed for body areas |
Results
CoolSculpting results timeline: before and after, week by week
Fat freezing is a slow treatment. The area is numb and may look a little swollen for the first weeks, and real change comes from fat being cleared over about three months. Any altered sensation usually settles within about a month. A second session is planned only once the first result can be judged.

Safety
Is CoolSculpting safe? PAH and other risks explained
For most people cryolipolysis is well tolerated: redness, bruising, swelling, sensitivity and numbness are common and usually fade within weeks. The risk that matters most is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). Instead of shrinking, the treated fat slowly becomes larger and firmer, often in the shape of the applicator. An early estimate based on manufacturer data was about 1 in 20,000 treatment cycles (0.0051%), but a 2017 systematic review that identified 16 published cases concluded that the true incidence may be higher than previously reported. PAH does not go away by itself and is usually corrected with liposuction once it has stabilized.
Cryolipolysis should not be used in people with cold-triggered blood conditions such as cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, and is avoided over hernias, wounds or during pregnancy.

Evidence
Does CoolSculpting work? What the research says
Cryolipolysis is the most studied non-invasive fat-reduction method. A 2015 systematic review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery screened 319 articles and included 19 studies. The results were consistent in direction but modest in size, and most studies were small, unblinded or industry-supported. The figures below are averages; individual change ranges from barely noticeable to clearly visible.

Ho & Jagdeo, J Drugs Dermatol, 2017Aftercare
After fat freezing: aftercare and keeping your result
There is no wound and no recovery period in the usual sense. Most people go back to work straight away. A few minutes of massage right after treatment is common practice; in one study it was linked with a larger reduction at two months, although the difference was no longer clear at four months. Beyond that, aftercare is about comfort, watching for warning signs and keeping your weight steady.
- Wear soft, loose clothing over the area for a few days.
- Use simple pain relief if advised for delayed aching, which is most common on the abdomen.
- Carry on with normal exercise once comfortable; it does not undo the treatment.
- Keep a steady weight; remaining fat cells can still grow with weight gain.
- Take photos at 8–12 weeks in the same light and position as your baseline.

Traveling to Seoul
CoolSculpting in Seoul for international patients
Non-surgical fat reduction is easy to fit into a trip because there is no wound, but the result takes 2–3 months, so plan how you will judge it from home. At Hommage Clinic, international patients have a body-contouring assessment with Dr. Kim, who explains whether one of the clinic's heat-based options suits the area, or whether cryolipolysis elsewhere or surgery would serve you better.
- Message us by WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or the contact form with the area, your height and weight and your dates; ask for language support if needed.
- Mention any cold-related blood condition, hernia, recent surgery, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Bring your passport for registration and a list of your medicines.
- Take baseline photos before you travel, and repeat them at 8–12 weeks.
Choosing well
How to choose a CoolSculpting clinic in Seoul
Fat freezing is widely advertised in Gangnam, and devices range from the original CoolSculpting system to many other cryolipolysis machines. Use these questions at any clinic, including when comparing it with another body-contouring method:
- Which exact device and applicator? Ask the brand and model, and whether it is approved for use in Korea.
- Does a doctor assess me first? Pinchability, skin laxity, weight history and cold-related conditions should be checked.
- Is PAH explained honestly? You should hear about this rare risk and how it would be managed.
- How many applicator cycles are planned? Ask how many placements cover your area evenly.
- When will the result be reviewed? A review at 8–12 weeks should come before any second session.
- Do I get a written quote? Including the number of cycles, areas and follow-up.
What affects CoolSculpting cost in Seoul?
The cost of cryolipolysis depends mainly on the number of applicator cycles, the size of the applicators, the number of areas and whether a second session is needed. The device brand also matters. Heat-based alternatives are priced by area, device and number of sessions. None of these is covered by Korea's National Health Insurance; at Hommage Clinic you receive a written quote at your assessment before deciding.

CoolSculpting and cryolipolysis: frequently asked questions
Does Hommage Clinic offer CoolSculpting?
Hommage Clinic does not list CoolSculpting or another cryolipolysis device. For localized fat, the clinic's options include ONDA, which uses microwave energy to heat the deep fat layer, and Tune Body. Dr. Kim assesses your area and explains which approach, if any, is likely to help before you book a treatment.
Does CoolSculpting hurt?
Cryolipolysis is uncomfortable rather than very painful for most people. You usually feel intense cold, pulling and aching for the first 5–10 minutes, then numbness. The massage afterward can sting briefly. Some people develop delayed aching a few days later, especially on the abdomen, which usually settles within one to two weeks.
How long do CoolSculpting results last?
Fat cells that are destroyed and cleared do not come back, so the change is long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable. The remaining fat cells can still grow with weight gain, including in the treated area. Cryolipolysis also does not stop normal aging changes such as skin loosening.
How many cryolipolysis sessions will I need?
Many people have one or two sessions per area. A second session is usually considered only after the first result can be judged, at least 6–8 weeks later. Larger or thicker areas may need more than one applicator placement in the same visit to cover the whole bulge evenly.
What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a rare side effect in which treated fat becomes larger and firmer instead of smaller, usually noticed 2–6 months after cryolipolysis. It does not resolve by itself and is generally corrected with liposuction after it stabilizes. Tell a doctor if a treated area keeps growing in the months after treatment.
Is cryolipolysis a weight-loss treatment?
No. Cryolipolysis reduces a modest amount of fat in one area, and your weight on the scale barely changes. For weight concerns, a medical review of diet, activity, sleep and hormones matters more. Conditions such as PCOS can make weight harder to manage and are worth checking.
Can foreigners get body contouring treatment in Seoul?
Yes. Visitors and foreign residents can book a body-contouring assessment at Hommage Clinic in Gangnam. Walk-ins are welcome, or book ahead for a set time; bring your passport for registration. Results from fat reduction take weeks to show, so plan follow-up timing with your travel dates, and contact us before your visit to arrange language support.
How much fat does CoolSculpting remove?
A 2015 systematic review of 19 studies found average reductions in the treated fat layer of about 14.7–28.5% measured with calipers and 10.3–25.5% measured with ultrasound. That is a visible change for many people, but not a large volume, and some people see little difference.
How cold does cryolipolysis get?
The applicator cools the fat to a controlled low temperature, discussed in reviews as around 4°C, for a fixed time. A protective gel pad shields the skin. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than skin, nerves and muscle, which is why the fat is affected while surrounding tissue is spared.
CoolSculpting or ONDA: which is better?
They use opposite energies. Cryolipolysis cools a pinchable fold of fat; ONDA uses microwave energy to heat the fat layer while cooling the skin surface, and may also firm skin a little. Neither is better for everyone. Dr. Kim compares them for your area at an assessment; Hommage Clinic lists ONDA but not a cryolipolysis device.
Who should not have cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis should not be used in people with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. It is also avoided during pregnancy and over hernias, open wounds or active skin conditions. Tell the doctor about any numbness, recent surgery or circulation problems in the area.
Can I exercise after CoolSculpting?
Yes. There is no wound, so normal activity and exercise can resume as soon as you feel comfortable, usually the same day. Exercise does not undo the treatment, and keeping active helps you maintain a stable weight, which protects the result.
Does CoolSculpting tighten loose skin?
No. Cryolipolysis reduces fat only, and removing fat under loose skin can sometimes make looseness more noticeable. If skin laxity is part of your concern, a heat-based option such as RF body tightening or body HIFU may suit better.
